HyperionDev is a South African coding school addressing the South African tech education gap. Its founder and CEO, South African entrepreneur Riaz Moola, established the school while he was still an undergraduate at the University of Edinburgh, and soon earned the backing of Google, Facebook, and Cambridge University. School Locations

HyperionDev has two in-person campuses in South Africa. Their Johannesburg campus is located just outside the city in the Dunkeld West suburb, where they share an office complex with animation and green energy businesses. Their Cape Town location is in the busy Woodstock neighborhood of the city, located inside the Woodstock Exchange shopping mall just a few short blocks from the Woodstock train station. What Classes Are Available?

The course catalogue at HyperionDev features five main classes: the Full Stack Web & Software Engineering bootcamp, the Web Developer bootcamp, the Software Engineer bootcamp, the Data Science bootcamp, and the Fundamentals of Computer

Science bootcamp offered in conjunction with UNISA. The most intensive program is the Full Stack Web & Software Engineering bootcamp. Students in this program begin by working with HTML, CSS, SCSS, and JavaScript (including JSON and jQuery), before moving on to Java, SQL, and APIs alongside object-oriented programming, computer science, and algorithms. In addition, students in this class learn to use PHP and the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express, ReactJS, and Node.js). Web Developer students focus on the full stack, using HTML, CSS, JavaScript (including jQuery) as well as the MERN stack while also learning about APIs and UX/UI design. Software Engineering students, meanwhile, focus more on the back end, learning Python and Java in service of programming and engineering skills, as well as databases, algorithms, and machine learning. Data Science students get even more exposure to the data side of coding. They learn Python and SQL as they gain proficiency in object-oriented programming, Natural Language Processing, and data analytics and data visualization, as well as more in-depth experience with machine learning and artificial intelligence. The Fundamentals of Computer Science bootcamp combines computer science and software engineering education, learning Python to work with data structures and object-oriented programming.

Class Formats

All HyperionDev course formats provide the same lessons, mentorship, tutoring, and career coaching, whether students study online or onsite at either the Johannesburg or Cape Town location. Students can study full-time in courses that run 3-6 months, or part-time in courses that run 6-12 months. Those attending full-time on-campus sessions attend class 10am-4pm, Monday through Friday, and those taking online courses combine live 1-on-1 code reviews and mentorship, synchronous project deadlines, and on-demand text-based instruction that can be downloaded to work on even when the student does not have internet access. Through HyperionDev’s sister company GoGrammar, students receive human feedback on all their code within 36-48 hours of code submission.

Admissions Process

For most HyperionDev courses, enrolling for class is as simple as completing the free trial before registering and submitting payment. The exception is the Full Stack Web & Software Engineering bootcamp, which has a competitive admissions process during which students must take an assessment demonstrating competence in problem-solving skills. A background in technology is not required for registration in any bootcamp, but is helpful for competing for admission into the Full Stack Web & Software Engineering bootcamp. In 2021, HyperionDev announced that 60% of their admitted students are women.

Pricing & Payment Options

Tuition at HyperionDev ranges from $5,000 to $7,500, depending on the course. Students can receive a discount for paying up front and through seasonal promotions, as well as for having attended previous bootcamps. Students also have the option of making monthly installment payments over the course of their bootcamp. The school works with several South African financial partners to offer student loans, and also offers needs-based partial scholarships to South African students as well as small merit-based scholarships.

Career Support Services

Every bootcamp includes career coaching with a dedicated career services counselor. This includes assisting with interview preparation and support in developing application materials. The curriculum is project-oriented, and students complete multiple practical assessments in every unit of the course, which they can add to their professional portfolio of work. Students receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course, and support for graduates continues beyond graduation, with access to a dedicated jobs and networking platform.

HyperionDev advertises a 72% job placement rate within three months, and a 95% job placement rate within five months. Most alumni hold job titles like software developer, web developer, and data scientist. Students have found careers at major global corporations like Amazon, IBM, and Nikon, as well as South African enterprises like First National Bank South Africa, The Reach Trust, and Vitality.
