Students can enroll from North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. In addition to courses in software engineering, data science, and UX design that are available on both a part-time and full-time basis, General Assembly has dedicated part-time courses in data analytics, Python, JavaScript, visual design, and React development.

Since its original launch in 2011, General Assembly has established itself as a leader in the tech education space. Its courses span a well-rounded collection of topics including coding, design, project management, and data. What started as a co-working space in Midtown Manhattan a decade ago has since evolved into a private school that offers education in campuses and online communities around the world.

General Assembly’s courses are geared toward two major groups. Full-time courses, also called Immersives, courses, are designed to facilitate a career change into a coding, data, or UX design role. Part-time courses, or Accelerators, are designed for people who want to advance their tech careers by learning a new skill within their current roles.

In addition to the locations where they host in-person classes, General Assembly facilitates online enrollment and hosts online communities across the U.S., Europe, Singapore, and Australia. These courses are held remotely, which means they can technically be taken from anywhere in the world with a reliable internet connection. However, being part of a GA online community of 40,000+ students from full-time and part-time courses still provides unique networking benefits. In addition to connecting with like-minded peers, you’ll also have access to the organization’s local hiring partners—which is incredibly helpful when starting to search for work.

What Classes Are Available?

On the coding side, GA offers a Software Engineering Immersive, a 480-hour course that delves into numerous aspects of programming. This training program is divided into 4 distinct units: front end development, full stack development, front end frameworks, and APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) with additional full stack concepts. Through working on real projects like websites and web applications, you’ll learn the fundamental concepts technical foundation employers are looking for in the workplace.

Other coding courses include more specialized options that focus on Front End Web Development, JavaScript, Python, and React. Through 40 to 60 hours of part-time coursework, usually in the evenings, you can build a new skill even if you have other daily work or family commitments.

For those who are interested in data-focused careers, there is a Data Science Immersive available. It delves into 5 units on data science fundamentals, exploratory data analysis, statistical modeling, machine learning, and other advanced topics. Additional data science training includes courses in data analytics and python programming.

In design, GA offers a User Experience (UX) Design Immersive which focuses on the foundations of both UX and UI, the user interface. Through 480 hours of hands-on courses, you’ll learn to test and create dynamic designs for the user side of websites and web applications. For shorter options, there is a 40-hour UX design course and a 32-hour visual design program.

Class Formats

General Assembly offers a variety of class formats including in-person and live online, as well as a few on-demand options which are self-paced. Most in-person campuses limit class sizes to 25-30 students, which ensures that questions and concerns don’t get lost in the crowd. These instructor-led courses are taught with employers in mind, and each subject’s curriculum is tailored toward the technical foundation students need to secure a career in the field. Each class includes extensive study materials such as expertly created lesson decks and project toolkits you can revisit even once you’ve started on a relevant career path if you need to refresh your knowledge.

The majority of General Assembly’s live online courses are designed to provide a similar experience to their in-person offering. They are still led by expert instructors, only through a teleconference platform rather than in a classroom. Another remote option is their self-paced courses in digital marketing, data analysis, or UX. These options still provide access to expert instructors via multiple 1:1 mentor sessions, but otherwise are completely self-led by the student through previously created lessons.

Admissions Process

Because General Assembly’s course sizes are limited (even for online options) to ensure individual success, admission is not guaranteed. The first step is submitting an application to your desired course, then an Admissions representative will contact you for a chat about your experience and goals to determine whether or not the course is a good fit. If you’re a complete beginner, this might sound intimidating—however, you can rest assured that many courses are geared toward teaching students with little to no experience in the field.

There is an additional step if you choose to take one of GA’s longer Immersives; applicants complete admissions assessments in the subject area to show that they are prepared for the curriculum. Beyond that, if you are accepted, an initial down payment secures your spot. Pricing & Payment Options

Pricing varies for GA’s courses; their full-time courses or Immersives cost about $15,950, while the part-time 40-60 hour courses usually range from $3,000 to $5,000. This can be steep, especially if you are early in your career path. However, one of General Assembly’s main goals is to make tech education accessible for everyone and they have plenty of financing options if the price range is beyond your current budget.

If you are not in a high-paying field or this is your first career, the ISA (Income Share Agreement) allows you to defer your tuition until you are earning at least $40,000 per year. This option is only available for the Immersives, as they are the most expensive and comprehensive courses best for career preparation. This keeps upfront costs to a minimum, which is necessary for anyone early in their career path.

Not taking an Immersive, but still need financial help? Alternatives include 0% interest loans through GA’s lending partners or installment plans, both of which spread the cost over more manageable monthly payments. There are also possibilities for scholarships, employer sponsorship, and a GI Bill Benefit for veterans.

Career Support Services

Beyond education alone, General Assembly’s services include a Career Services (Outcomes) Program that is dedicated to ensuring that its students succeed after completing a course. All GA Immersives include 1:1 career coaching, not only during the course but also beyond graduation. Your Career Coach will help to develop the skills you’ll need as you look for work in your chosen field, and they’ll work with you to ensure that your resume, portfolio, and online presence reflect those skills accordingly.

In addition to personalized career coaching for Immersive students, GA also hosts several career development workshops. Many of these live online and in-person events are geared toward helping those who are already established in their career, but there are plenty for job seekers or career changers as well.

Alumni Outcomes

General Assembly’s latest outcomes report covers over 4,000 students who enrolled in Immersive programs in software engineering, data science, or UX design in 2020. Of the 5,150 students that enrolled, 84.3% graduated from their program. Upon graduating, students are eligible for career services. Of those who did participate in the Full-Time Career Seekers program, 95.7% accepted a field-relevant job offer within a year of graduating. Starting salaries vary depending on location and specialty, though coding and data are generally high-earning fields regardless.

The types of companies where GA students find work varies depending on their location. There are physical campuses or online communities in all of the major US tech hubs, where plenty of job opportunities are available across industries.
