DeltaV Code School is an institution under the aegis of the not-for-profit NewBoCode organization. Its mission is to bring tech skills to the population of Iowa, a state with low unemployment but a large skills gap. An 18-week bootcamp-style curriculum prepares students for careers as front end or full stack developers. Other programs offered by the school are digital marketing, computer ops, and cybersecurity.
DeltaV is an Iowa-based coding, digital marketing, computer operations, and cybersecurity school for Iowans. It seeks to provide opportunities to bridge the skills gap in a state with a lively tech sector but not always the skilled workforce to staff it. DeltaV is an offshoot of the not-for-profit NewBoCode (the New Bohemian Innovation Collaborative), which in turn grew out of the Iowa Startup Accelerator. The school was established in 2017 and is under the supervision of software developers Jessica Bertling and Keith Dahlby. It prides itself on its mission to develop Iowa’s tech workforce and foster diversity in its ranks. The school offers diversity-based scholarships, discounts for veterans, and is covered by the GI Bill.

DeltaV is located in Cedar Rapids’ New Bohemia district, an area of the city that has sprung back to remarkable life following the 2008 flood. The school is housed in the Geonetric Building, a 45,000 sq. ft. haven for tech development in the heart of the district.

Subjects Taught at DeltaV
DeltaV has four main programs: coding, digital marketing, computer operations, and cybersecurity. The goal of all four is to place Iowans into the tech workforce. The courses are bootcamp-style immersion courses that are primarily designed to be taken by full-time students on weekdays, although some classes are also available evenings and weekends. What Classes Are Available?
Following a free introductory workshop (Code 101), students interested in the coding program are funneled into the four-week beginning Code 201 class (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript). This is followed by the four-week intermediate Code 301 (intermediate CSS and JavaScript, React and many general principles of computer science.) Completing Code 301 prepares students for the ten-week Code 401 (C# and the Microsoft ASP.NET core framework) and then roles as software developers. The entire bootcamp-style program, therefore, lasts for 18 weeks.
The digital marketing curriculum ideally begins with Code 101 and 201 for students to have a technical foundation upon which to build. The marketing track then branches off into DMD 301 (Digital Marketing Channel Developer Tactics; four weeks) and DMD 401 (Digital Marketing Developer Campaign Strategy; five weeks.) Completion of the program should have graduates ready to find jobs as digital marketing developers
The computer ops course seeks to equip students with the knowledge to assume roles either at IT help desks or in systems administration. The course begins with a one-week workshop, Ops 102, Intro to Computer Operations, which segues directly into Ops 201, Foundations of Computer Operations (four weeks), and thence into Ops 301, Networking and Systems Administration (also four weeks.)
The newest offering at DeltaV is the Cybersecurity program. The course runs for ten weeks and, teaching through real-world examples drawn from the news and real-life developments in the field, prepares students for both the job market and third-party certification. The program culminates with a 72-hour “hacking range” project in which students are required to fight off a cyberattack. (Candidates for this program should already have substantial knowledge of computers and their governing principles.)
Class Formats
Classes at DeltaV are taught in person at the school’s Cedar Rapids location. Students may also take them online. Most classes are taught during the daytime on weekdays, although evening and/or weekend versions of some of the classes are available. Each class also includes a self-paced prework phase.
All classes require students to provide their own laptops. Some of the classes also require the purchase of a few textbooks or software subscriptions.
Admissions Process
Students begin the admissions process by filling out an online application. An admissions officer from DeltaV will then contact the candidate to discuss placement and determine whether the school represents a good fit.
Pricing & Payment Options
All the four-week courses are priced at $5,000. The longer classes are priced as follows: Code 401 is $12,000, the cybersecurity program is $10,000, and the five-week DMD 401 costs $7,000.
Discounts are available for students who pay for the three coding classes (201, 301, and 401) simultaneously, for veterans, and for recent college graduates. Diversity tuition awards are available, and the coding curriculum is GI BIll-approved. Financing options may be arranged through SkillsFund.
Career Support Services
Career coaching is part and parcel of the upper-level classes taught at DeltaV. Workshops in career development, training, and support are included, and two full days of the Code 401 course are devoted to preparing graduates for the job market. Job search assistance is also available following graduation. The school does not guarantee that graduates will find in-field employment, however.
Alumni Outcomes
DeltaV states that all their students manage to find in-field roles within several months of graduation. The school reports an average starting salary of $58,000. Be aware of the small sample size: the school has graduated 56 students to date.
