CodeCore College: Find Top Courses & Training Locations

More than a coding school, CodeCore College allows students to study subjects such as full stack web development and DevOps as well as business and education. The school has partnered with three Canadian higher education institutions in order to help students transfer their CodeCore College education to a university degree.

CodeCore College holds the honor of being among the first coding schools west of the Canadian Rockies. The school has operated in the Vancouver area since 2008, starting under the simple name Coding Bootcamp. Jay Holtslander and Tam Kbeili, the school’s co-founders, ushered the center through several name and location changes. Both co-founders have since moved on from the school, but their legacy persists. Under the school’s Scottish Qualifications Authority accreditation, graduates of the school can apply their hours studied in the CodeCore College curriculum towards undergraduate degree programs at higher education institutions. CodeCore College has direct transfer agreements with programs at North Island College, University of the Fraser Valley, and the University of Canada West—all conveniently located in or near Vancouver.

School Locations

CodeCore operates from New Westminster, part of the Metro Vancouver Regional District. The in-person campus is located in the bustling Uptown neighborhood of New Westminster. Prospective students can take a virtual tour of the school’s interior, including classrooms and informal gathering places.

Subjects Taught at CodeCore College

Students at CodeCore College can learn web development, cyber security, and DevOps, as well as education and business administration. Prospective students looking into their options to learn to code can use Noble Desktop’s Classes Near Me feature. What Classes Are Available?

CodeCore College offers several opportunities for learning to code. Complete beginners can start with the Fundamentals of Coding class, which introduces students to HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Students with some familiarity with coding can dive into the school’s Developer Bootcamp, a full stack program. The school also offers several diploma programs (roughly equivalent to US associate’s degrees) for students seeking college credentials for their learning. These programs include the Cyber Security Diploma, the DevOps Professional Diploma, and the Advanced Web Application Development diploma. The school also offers diplomas for business administrators and education assistants in cooperation with Portage College. Students in some coding programs have the opportunity to include a practicum or co-op at the end of their course. Continuing learners can also take the school’s Elixir and Phoenix class to gain additional training in new coding skills.

Class Formats

CodeCore College Courses are taught in-person at the school’s Uptown New Westminster campus. Most programs run on a full-time academic calendar and take one to two years to complete. The developer bootcamp is a full-time 12-week program, and the Fundamentals of Coding and the Elixir and Phoenix classes are both part-time five-week programs. Co-ops and practicums add additional time to program lengths. Part-time classes have a final test or quiz, while full-time programs combine quizzes, homework, and final projects to help students master concepts.

Admissions Process

Students apply to CodeCore Colleges through the Aplicar system. For most courses, students must be able to demonstrate a high-school education or equivalent. Applicants to the Development Bootcamp will need to take a preliminary skills assessment, but completing the Fundamentals of Coding course waives that requirement. Most diploma courses require a high-school grade average of C or higher in the final semester, as well as certain English exam scores for non-Canadians. Diplomas offered in conjunction with Portage College have higher grade averages and score requirements for admissions.

Pricing & Payment Options

Tuition ranges from 950 CAD for a part-time class, to 10,700 CAD for a bootcamp, to 25,000 CAD for the DevOps diploma course. Co-op options increase the cost of tuition, and some courses incur additional fees. Application to full-time programs costs a nonrefundable 250 CAD. Prospective students can look for fee waivers on the Aplicar application site. CodeCore College does not advertise scholarships or financing programs, but the school is accredited by StudentAidBC.

Career Support Services

Students complete practical final projects in coding to help them prepare for real-world coding jobs. Optional co-ops and practicums enable students who elect to take them to gain on-the-job experience working on real employers’ coding projects before graduation. Bootcamp graduates also report demo days and interview support from CodeCore College staff.

Alumni Outcomes

The school advertises that 96% of bootcamp graduates are employed within three months of graduation. CodeCore College has alumni working at major global corporations like Amazon and SAP as well as homegrown tech companies like Vancouver’s Unbounce. Students also have the option to pursue higher education through CodeCore College’s partner institutions.

Students of CodeCore College report positive experiences learning, especially in the school’s bootcamp program. Graduates appreciate the thoughtful instructors and staff that work at CodeCore College, and the extended length of the program compared to other schools’ bootcamps. One graduate mentioned that the program’s “approach to teaching helped me to understand why I was doing what I was doing, as opposed to only learning how to do it.” He attributed his success in the program in large part to the fact that teachers and teaching assistants “were on-site for 12 hours a day to help with anything I needed, regardless if it was included in the curriculum.”

Another graduate similarly expressed gratitude for the all-day staff presence, noting, “The bootcamp is more intense than I anticipated, and there [is] a lot of material, and not a lot of time to do [it] all” without the help of instructional support. Students describe a close-knit “alumni network consisting of people in the local software development industry” who also serve as the school’s employment partners. Graduates also give special mention to demonstration days for final projects as students look forward to new careers in their near futures.
