Keaton Quilts, a small quilting company located in New York City, offers a class called Intro to Sashiko, where you can learn this traditional Japanese embroidery technique. Sashiko can be used for decoration or to reinforce cloth and clothing. You’ll learn both in this class. You will create a pair of coasters and will use hand stitching to decorate them. To attend this class you should have a general knowledge of sewing. Supplies are included.
In Seattle, the UW Botanic Gardens runs a class called Botanical Fiber Art Workshop: Floral Embroidery Basics! In this class, you’ll learn to embroider wildflowers. The instructor will cover a number of beginner-friendly stitches including back stitch, satin stitch, stem stitch, reverse chain stitch, French knot, and leaf stitch. You’ll receive an embroidery kit that contains a wooden hoop, floral transfer designs, embroidery needle, embroidery thread skeins, surprise pink pattern fabric, backing materials, and printed instructions.
In Los Angeles, Los Angeles City College offers a variety of arts and crafts classes, including embroidery classes. Embroidery/Cross Stitching covers the basics, including material and techniques. You’ll also learn about the history of embroidery. In this class, you’ll use a grid to lay out your pattern. You’ll transfer your image, and you’ll use embroidery techniques to create a piece of art.
The Evanston Art Center, based in Evanston Illinois, offers a number of live online classes. This nonprofit center aims to foster an appreciation of the arts. In the Extreme Embroidery Workshop, you’ll learn about embroidery and discover how it can be used to create many different images and ideas. There is a supply list for this class, which includes fabric, needles, and embroidery thread.
