Finding Datasets in SQL

Download datasets from Kaggle and convert them into databases using PostgreSQL.

Discover accessible resources to obtain diverse datasets and learn how to transform them into functional databases. Understand the challenges involved in setting up databases from available datasets and explore practical solutions.

Key Insights

  • Utilize Kaggle as an open-source community to access extensive datasets on various topics, including popular culture examples such as Game of Thrones and video game sales.
  • Convert downloadable datasets, typically in CSV format, into usable databases by installing database software like PostgreSQL and importing the data.
  • Recognize the complexity of database creation and management, which often requires specialized skills in database architecture and administration, leading Noble Desktop to create their own dataset for practical learning.

There are different data sources. Um, so Kaggle datasets. Now the, the issue always with datasets is how do you turn that into a database, right? So you probably have to use like ChatGPT to learn how to install Postgres on your computer and how to import a dataset to set up as a server.

But, uh, this is a place where you can get all sorts of datasets. This is like an open source, kind of open community place to download stuff. So they, I mean, they have all sorts of panic, Adidas web store, like, you know, there's all sorts of stuff.

So you could probably find something that you're interested in, in this dataset. Uh, like I wonder if they have stuff about gaming or something, right? Video game sales, Game of Thrones, right? So there's, there's something fun that you could get now. These aren't databases, right? So you need to turn this into a database.

So let's say you want to do something with like Game of Thrones or something. Right. Um, so you can download this.

A lot of times these are going to be like, yeah, there's CSV files normally. Um, and so it might not be a perfect database, but you know, you have to see that's, but this is a place that you can get data that might be something that could be interesting. Yeah.

Unfortunately that's, that's the hardest thing. That's why we had to create our own dataset. Because it's, it's not so easy to just create a database, architect the tables, you know, and do all that without being a database architect, database administrator, whereas most people aren't going to do that in their job.

They're going to be people just querying the database. So, and so you can't just go out there and find too many databases that are just freely available that you can log in and start using because you're using somebody's server, you're working it, you're, you're costing them. Higher musical.

They have to host that database. So that costs them it. And so they normally just don't open up, open up their data.
