What is the Fastest Way to Learn SketchUp?

Accelerate your mastery of SketchUp: How to learn SketchUp quickly.

For some students, one of the most important considerations when it comes to learning SketchUp is speed; they need to learn this application as quickly as possible. This article discusses some common ways to learn SketchUp, and provides details about how long each option takes, and what type of training you can expect to receive.

What Is SketchUp?

First released in 2000, SketchUp is a popular 3D modeling application. It is used by Architects, Interior Designers, Landscape Designers, and a number of other types of designers. The application was created by architectural engineer Brad Schell and software developer Joe Esch. Their goal was to create a 3D modeling program that was accessible to everyone, in contrast to existing software, which many people found difficult to use. There is a free version of the application, in addition to a number of paid versions. It is owned by Trimble Inc.

What Can You Do With SketchUp?

If you want to create 3D models, but you don’t have a lot of experience in this field, SketchUp can be a useful tool. Most people find this application to be user-friendly and say that creating, viewing, and changing 3D models is relatively easy. Its many tools help speed up the work process. In addition, it allows users to collaborate with a team.

Ways to Learn SketchUp

Every SketchUp learning option requires a different time commitment and provides a different training experience. You’ll find a variety of different types of classes including free resources, introductory classes, on-demand classes, and certificate programs.

Free Resources

There is a wealth of free SketchUp resources online. For instance, some schools provide free learning resources so that students can gain a better understanding of a particular topic before they commit to a paid class. YouTube also contains free SketchUp tutorials, and SketchUp’s website offers free resources for users, including a number of resources on how to set up this application and how to get started using it. However, while free resources can be a good way to learn some basics, or troubleshoot a problem, they are unlikely to be a fast way to learn SketchUp. One reason for this is that when you use free resources, you’ll probably need to invest a significant amount of time in finding resources that work for you. Another thing that can make free resources time-consuming to use is that you’ll constantly need to spend time vetting your sources for accuracy and currency. Unfortunately, not everything that you find online will be either up-to-date or reliable.

Introductory Classes

One of the quickest SketchUp learning options is an introductory class. Most introductory classes only take a day or two to complete. These types of classes are usually designed for beginners and they cover fundamental concepts and basic skills. They are a quick way to get started using SketchUp, and they are usually relatively inexpensive. However, if you’re planning to use SketchUp professionally, an introductory class may not be enough. Instead, you may want to opt for a bootcamp, which is likely to be more comprehensive.

On-Demand Classes

On-demand classes can be a relatively fast way to learn SketchUp. When you learn on-demand, you complete the material at your own pace. That means that if you’re motivated, you can learn quickly. Many on-demand platforms offer on-demand SketchUp classes including Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, Udemy, and Skillshare. However, while you can complete an on-demand class fairly quickly, you’re unlikely to get a comprehensive education this way. In addition, on-demand classes lack live instruction, meaning that you won’t get all the benefits that come with having an experienced professional to guide you through the learning process.

Certificate Programs and Bootcamps

At first glance, a certificate program or bootcamp might not seem like a particularly fast way to learn SketchUp since most take weeks to finish. However, when you take into account what you’re actually learning, these types of classes turn out to be relatively quick. With a bootcamp or certificate program, instruction is accelerated and you learn a lot in a short amount of time. These programs are designed to get you career-ready as quickly as possible, and they don’t waste time on anything unnecessary. In addition, most come with a range of career support offerings, which can help you gain the knowledge and network you’ll need to find a job quickly. Overall, a certificate program or bootcamp is a relatively quick way to learn SketchUp.
