Discover the intricacies of creating accurate entrance walls in Revit using the offset tool. This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to use the offset tool effectively for wall creation and modification.
Key Insights
- The offset tool in Revit is utilized for creating accurate walls in the entrance area, eliminating possibilities of errors as opposed to other user-driven methods.
- Using the offset tool starts with selecting the object, setting the parameters, and modifying the wall locations. The tool also includes the option to copy or move walls depending on the project's requirements.
- The height and location of the wall can be adjusted in Revit by changing the top constraints and setting constraints with either negative or positive values. Adding to the selection and removing from the selection can be done with the Control and Shift keys respectively.

Now we're going to create the walls for our entrance area here. To do that, we're going to use the offset tool. And this is a good tool if you're familiar with how it works in AutoCAD.
In some cases, this may not be the best option, but it does have a lot of good applications in Revit. And I think one of the main things is that it's going to be accurate all the time, instead of just being user-driven where, you know, I could simply just draw the walls in here and then adjust them, but there's a little bit more room for error. So this is a good way to ensure that you're drawing things in accurately.
To use the offset tool, we're going to want to make sure that we start first with the offset tool. So you may notice that a lot of these modified type tools, we need to select the object first and then go in and do it. Offset is one of those ones where we need to establish the parameters and then we could modify the wall locations.
What's cool with offset is we have the option to copy, meaning it'll place another wall in there, or we can say not to copy, which means it'll actually just move these walls along. So in our case, what we're going to do is we want to copy because we don't want to lose these exterior walls here. And so what I'm going to do is I'm going to go in and I'm going to adjust this value from one foot to three foot and I'm going to go ahead and offset it.
And if you look here, how I'm moving my mouse, when I favor the left side of the wall, it's going to offset towards the interior. If I were to favor, say, the bottom side or the top here, that's the side it's going to offset towards. So I'm going to offset towards the interior.
And then now I have to make some adjustments to clean up my plan here. So I can use Trim Extend to Corner to trim to the corner. And then I can use Trim Extend Single Element, picking the side that I want to keep, to trim it down away from the offices.
So remember the Trim Extend Element, we're going to pick a cutting edge and then select the side we want to keep. The only thing we have to do now with this wall is we have to address its height. When I select the wall, you can see that it's set to go to top of parapet.
And that makes sense because, well, that's what this one was set to. And to make that work out a little bit better for our design, we want to change it to be up to level two with an offset. And so what's cool with these top constraints is we can actually go in and we can set those constraints with an offset of either negative or positive values.
In our case, we want to select both of these walls. And so if you select one, Control is our Add to Selection. And if you accidentally select something you don't want, you can hold down Shift and click, and that'll remove from your selection.
In our case, we want to Control and click to add the second wall to selection. We only have to do this once. I'm going to adjust my top constraint to level two, and I'm going to change my top offset to eight foot eight.
And that puts that wall at the height and the location where we want it to be.
