This is a detailed guide on how to utilize tools in the BIM 321 course, Introduction to Revit MEP, to place electrical devices and lighting devices, adjust their positioning, and create power circuit systems. It takes you through the process in a step-by-step manner, from placement of standard outlets to the creation of power circuit systems and adjusting their panels.
Key Insights
- When placing electrical and lighting devices in any building design, attention to detail is key. Precision in placement, not only to meet building regulations but also for the convenience of the building's future occupants, is paramount.
- Adjusting the positioning of these devices can be done through selecting the edge of the wall and the centerline, moving along until the wall is hit, and hitting 'EQ' to equalize their positions. This optimizes the layout of the devices, ensuring they're even on the walls.
- Creating power circuit systems involves selecting all outlets, choosing the power, selecting the panel, and assigning the panel to the outlets. This also includes choosing the right load for each panel to manage power distribution effectively.
Welcome back to the CAD Teacher VDCI video course content for the BIM 321 course, Introduction to Revit MEP. We need to go ahead and actually do our second level also, so I'm going to go to my Level 2, and we need to go ahead and place our electrical devices and lighting devices here. So I'm going to go up here to Electrical Fixture.
I want to go ahead and do the same kind of thing. I do not want to use my GFCI, so since I do have my GFCI selected here, because that was the last one that I placed, I'm going to go ahead and hop in my bathroom here, and just place the ones that I need to here. There we go.
I'm going to go ahead now and change over to my standard outlets, and place them in here. There we go. And again, if for some reason it's not wanting to give it the correct host, just make sure you hit Spacebar and move your mouse around.
Sometimes a little picky, but I'm just going the same basic outlay that I had in the previous place. There we go. Just keep working your way around.
Again, I might have to zoom in a little bit. There we go. And again, the host to really anything, so you have to be careful to make sure that you're picking the correct items.
There's that. Let's go ahead and hop over here, put some in this area here. There we go.
And maybe I wanted to equalize these out. Say you did want to equalize these out between the walls. For right now, I'm going to go ahead and actually just pop a couple more in here.
There we go. And let me go ahead. I'm going to come up here, pop them in here, and again, we're just working our way around.
There we are. I believe we have them all in there and we're good to go. So let's say we want to equalize these out so that they're even in the walls.
I'm going to go ahead. I'm going to go DI for dimension. I'm going to select this edge of the wall, select the center line there, and just continue working my way all the way down until I hit the wall here.
I could hit EQ. And there we go. I'm going to hit delete.
And there we are. That's equalized them out there. I'm going to go ahead.
Let's zoom extents. Control-S, save the file. And now let's go ahead and pop in our data devices.
So I'm going to come here, data. As you can see, we just have the data outlet playing, which is perfect. I'm going to go ahead and just zoom in, pop them in wherever I feel like I should.
Again, these are very easy, very simple to place. It's just the biggest thing about this is it is kind of time-consuming. I don't want to get those temporary dimensions.
They can kind of cause a little bit of issue when we're placing devices, but it's okay. There we go. I'm going to go ahead and place a couple in my different conference rooms.
There's that. And there we are. Perfect.
I'm going to go ahead, escape. I'm going to let zoom extents, Control-S, and save the file again. I want to go ahead.
Let's create our power circuit systems. So I'm going to select all the outlets here, power. Let's go ahead, select panel.
Let's take this to L or to PP2. There we go. We have quite a load on PP1 right now, so I'm going to go ahead and hit PP2, power, select panel, PP2, here, here, and I'm just selecting all these outlets there, power, select panel, PP2, here, here, here, here, and here, power, select panel, PP2, here, here, here, here, and here, power, select panel, PP2, here, here, here, here, and here, power, select panel, PP2.
I'm going to come into here, select these guys. I'm going to take these six and actually let's go ahead and make that five. I just held Shift to deselect.
I'm going to go power, select panel. I'm going to go ahead and change that to PP3, here, here, here, here, and here, power, select panel, PP3, here, here, here, and here, power, select panel, PP3, here, here, here, here, and here, power, select panel, PP3, here, and select all the outlets there, and I see what happened was I held Control, so I still have these selected, so I'm going to hit Escape and just clear my selection set and select those. Go power, select panel, and let's go to PP3.
There we are. The last thing I want to go ahead and do on the second floor is place in my switches. So up here on the device, I'm going to go lighting.
There we are. I want to go ahead. I'm going to choose my single pole, and I realized here that we do have wall washers in this room, so I'm going to place two there, and actually, I'm actually going to go ahead and place three because we have two different sets of wall washers.
Now I'm going to go ahead and place one here and here, here and here, again, just working my way down, and then I'm going to go ahead and switch this to three-way, one, two, and actually, I'm going to put a third one in for the wall washers, one, two, three. There we go. I'm going to hit Escape and zoom extents.
Let's go ahead and hop down back to that first floor to populate the other switches that we didn't quite get in there, and actually, I need to get some switches up here in the bathroom, so I'm going to go back to device. Let's go ahead and just choose the single pole, one, two, one, two, perfect. There we go, and I'm going to go ahead now.
Let's hop down to that first floor power plant because we do have the wall washers in here, so I'm going to select on this three-way switch. I'm going to go ahead and actually create similar. Pop another one in here and another one down here.
I'm going to go ahead and put another single pole, so I'm going to change my device to single pole, place another here, and a third one because there are two sets of wall washers in this room, and I believe that's all we should need. I'm going to go ahead and zoom extents. Zoom extents.
There we go. Again, it was a little of a glitch there, but not a big deal. If anything like that happens, just hit escape a couple of times, and then do your zoom extents.
I'm going to go ahead and Control-S, save the file. We've placed all of our devices for both the first floor and the second floor, and as you can see, these are very, very simple. Feel free to take these and expand upon this.
Put in different light fixtures. Put in different types of devices, those kind of things. They are all placed in the same exact fashion.
I'm going to go ahead and pause this video here. When we come back, we'll be creating the circuits and the switch systems for the lights. See you then.
