Discover the process for creating sprinkler legends in architectural drawings using specific software tools. Learn how to add crucial fields for an accurate representation, duplicate the legends for different levels, and incorporate images for a visually comprehensive legend.
Key Insights
- The creation of sprinkler legends involves saving the project, going to the view tab, scheduling quantities, and adding specific fields like image, type, k factor (the size of the sprinkler hole), temperature rating, level, and count.
- The project can be duplicated for different levels, with each legend customized by filtering and sorting by level and type. This process ensures the creation of accurate and comprehensive sprinkler legends for each level of the project.
- Adding images to each sprinkler in the legend enhances visual comprehension. The images, specific to each type of sprinkler, can be added from an external source, contributing to a detailed and informative sprinkler legend.

In the last video we finished our dimensions and annotations for our level 2 RCPs and in this video we'll create our sprinkler legends. So let's first off save our project, CTRL S or file save. Okay, so the first thing I'd like to do is let's go to the view tab, look for schedules and schedule quantities and let's find sprinklers and click okay.
Now we're going to add a few fields to this. So let's find image, okay, and let's look for type and then our k factor, which is essentially the size of the hole in the sprinkler where water comes out from. And then let's look for our temperature rating.
Essentially sprinklers will go off at a certain temperature from heat and this will cause the bulb holding that pressure inside to explode and the water will come out of the sprinkler. And by the way hopefully we all know not all sprinklers go off at the same time. Okay, let's look for level and finally count.
Okay, and I think this is the order I'd like to do. So image, type, k factor, temperature rating, level and count. Now if you were working in an office you would probably include manufacturer because you would want them to know which sprinklers to order.
However in our case we're just using generic so we will not be adding that but do know that that's a typical part of the workflow. Okay, let's go ahead click okay. Now we're not going to be using this.
We're going to create one for level one and for level two. So in our project browser under schedules and quantities you should see a sprinkler schedule. So let's right click and duplicate it and let's call this rename sprinkler legend level one.
Okay, we can get out of the original one. Now let's go to our properties palette and let's look for filter and let's filter by level and it should equal level one in this case. Click okay.
All right next let's go to sorting and grouping and make sure we are sorting by type. We have three sprinkler types. We have the concealed pendant sprinkler, the semi-recessed pendant sprinkler and our upright sprinkler.
And lastly let's go ahead and uncheck itemize every instance. Okay this looks much better. Lastly let's add the image to each sprinkler.
So under the image category let's click here and let's go to add and find where your BIM 324 downloads folder is and go ahead and look for the images folder. And so for the half inch pendant let's bring in the half inch pendant png file. Okay let's go to the next sprinkler, go to add and look for half inch pendant on a drop.
Let's add that and lastly the half inch upright. Okay looks pretty good. Now let's go back in a project browser to sprinkler legend level one and let's duplicate this.
Let's rename this with level two. Okay now all we need to do is go to our filter, sort by level, but in this case it's going to be level two. Okay now the same as before let's just add the images here.
Now they're already selectable so our half inch pendant let's find that and then our half inch pendant on a drop and lastly our half inch upright. All right looks good. So in the next video we'll be putting our sheets together and adding our sprinkler legends to those sheets as well.
