Looking for some tricks of the trade to speed up your After Effects workflow? We've got you covered with this two part series on AE Tips and Tricks from Noble Desktop!
Copy Expression Only
1. Toggle open a property that already has an expression applied.
2. Go up to Edit - Copy Expression Only.
3. Select a property that does not have an expression applied.
4. Hit the stopwatch to set a keyframe.
5. Paste the expression into the new property using Cmd-V (Mac) / Ctrl-V (PC)
Reordering Layers
1. Shift-select all the layers in the desired order.
2. Cmnd-X (Mac) / Ctrl-X (PC) to cut them.
3. Ctrl-V (Mac) / Ctrl-V (PC) to paste them. The layers will now be in the new order.
Spatial Interpolation
1. Select two keyframes.
2. Right-click on either keyframe and navigate to Keyframe Interpolation.
3. In the first dropdown menu, select Spatial.
4. Click OK.
Edit Original
1. In the Project Panel, select any Illustrator or Photoshop asset.
2. Go up to Edit - Edit Original.
3. The original file will open in its respective software. Make any desired alterations to the asset in the software.
4. Save the asset in the software.
5. Go back to After Effects. After a few seconds, the asset will be updated to reflect the changes.
Time Reverse
1. Right-click on any layer with keyframes.
2. Go to Time - Time Reverse Layer.
3. This technique will flip the entire layer around in the Timeline, so it plays backward. Note that untrimmed layers will likely have their keyframes placed at the end. To avoid this, trim layers before reversing them.
Sequence Layers
1. Shift-select several layers.
2. Right-click on any selected layer.
3. Navigate to Keyframe Assistant - Sequence Layers. Doing this will order the layers in succession. Like the Time Reverse technique, trim the layers beforehand to avoid extra long sequences.

You guys. This is Tziporah Zions and this tutorial. I'm going to show you a bunch of tricks of the trade and be after effects. Truth be told, I'm just recording this now and this might run long, so this could be a two parter. So I'll see how long it is then, and I'll probably just put a disclaimer there if it's going to be a two parter or not.
00:00:20:21 - 00:00:38:09
Unknown
But yeah, so this tutorial, like I said, is going to be tricks and techniques to help speed up your workflow. There's like a mix of beginner level and intermediate tips here and we have a chapter list in the description. So let's scroll through that thing. And in particular also my cat has joined us. You might hear Sound of a Struggle.
00:00:39:09 - 00:00:56:28
Unknown
It's good for in this stuff because often we're working under deadlines and even outside of that, your personal products will benefit a ton from knowing how to officially speed up or handle certain workflows. So as for this tutorial, we're going to be using an app that I have here read for Instagram account where we're Noble desktop on Instagram.
00:00:56:28 - 00:01:19:14
Unknown
By the way, we just started a Tik Tok, so false that follow us there. So, you know, you have a ton of tips over there if you want to check this out. But yeah, so let's get started with the main tutorial. So I've made this trip over here. Nothing to do with the rest of this product here, but I made the shape here and I'm going to and I want it to have the same wiggling effect as is Hummingbird does.
00:01:20:06 - 00:01:51:14
Unknown
But I don't want to go to the trouble of like, typing out the expression that I have before, especially for working with like longer expressions. So what I'm going to be doing is I'm going to be putting down a keyframe and a keyframe, and I'm going to be clicking the attribute that has the expression already typed in. I'm going to go up to edit copy expression only head back over here to what I want to now have the new expression paste And if I hit play now, it also has that expression applied to it.
00:01:51:27 - 00:02:10:13
Unknown
Next one let's reorder layers. So I have this product already layered how I want it, but let's say I want to rearrange these layers. What you're going to be doing, you're actually going to be selecting. So I'm going to controller command, select my layers in the new order that I want them in. So you click, click, you got them.
00:02:10:27 - 00:02:32:23
Unknown
Now I'm going to command Control X to cut them out and then we're going to paste them back in and now we piece them back in. They are now in the new order, right? So the order that you cut them in is going to be the order that you paste them back in. All right. So now I'm going to teach you guys how to do spatial interpolation, which is a long way of saying make your keyframes nice and smooth.
00:02:33:10 - 00:02:54:28
Unknown
So I've separated my keyframes out here a little bit just so you can see what I'm about to do. And I'm going to right click on Let's do this keyframe. Come on, man, listen to me. I'm going to right click on this keyframe. I'm going to do keyframe interpolation over here. And basically what that's going to do, it's going to ask me like, Hey, do you want these keyframes to change?
00:02:54:28 - 00:03:16:12
Unknown
Like, really sharply like an A-line linear? Do you want it to be nice and smooth, like a busy day, which is kind of for purposes of this? It's like a curve in this different kind of busy day. Honestly, you're probably just going to pick one and settle on it. You can always do like auto busier. If you want more control, you can do like a different regular busier.
00:03:16:12 - 00:03:50:00
Unknown
A hold just means that it holds position and snaps a new one. But I'm going to just choose now you continue continuous busy day for my temporal and point interpolation. So that's going to just basically affect like how this order changes over time. On the spatial one affects the shape of the path. So you can see this line over here, I'm going to do this one and when I play it, you'll see it like flies in and it starts flying in a bit smoother than before.
00:03:50:06 - 00:04:07:26
Unknown
Whereas before you see the in comparison to the other keyframes, it's quite sharp. Now, if I took this into my graph editor here, you can actually see effects over here. You see how this is nice and smooth and suddenly it drops off sharply. So yeah, spatial interpolation is basically asking like, Hey, do you want to change the shape of its path?
00:04:07:26 - 00:04:26:11
Unknown
Do you want to change how it moves? You know, the kind of personality of its moving? Now, if that last thing about personality didn't make any sense, you didn't hear it from me. All right, So let me show you how to edit original. So what I mean by that is let's say you're working with like an outside fire, like a D, you know, an illustrator file.
00:04:27:11 - 00:04:47:01
Unknown
I'm going to choose my hummingbird files. You want to type it into project panel so I can bring it up there we go. You're going to select it, and then you hit command or control. E And what that's going to do is that's going to open the program that you originally created that asset in, and then you can edit that asset there, save it and it will be updated.
00:04:47:27 - 00:05:09:00
Unknown
So I've got my original open here. Let's say I want to make a little red heart shape on the bird save So command or control s Wait a moment and after Effects and it will. There we go. All right. Let me show you the time reversed keyframes. Now I'm going to play the original animation for you, and I want you to make note of the path of the hummingbird.
00:05:09:00 - 00:05:26:03
Unknown
All right. You see, it kind of holds in one place a little bit longer than the others. So let's say you want that to go in reverse. You right click on the particular layer, the keyframes on. And then we've got a time time reverse layer. Now check it out. You can even visually see that the keyframes are different.
00:05:26:14 - 00:05:44:00
Unknown
Now I'm going to play this again. And now you can see that the quick movements are at the beginning and the long pause at the end. So yeah, that's the time. Reverse keyframes. Now if you're working with a very long layer here because you start from the down here, if I hit time reverse, it's going to put those keyframes all the way at the end.
00:05:44:00 - 00:06:03:26
Unknown
So, you know, fair warning. Now I'm going to show you how to sequence layers. Now, we did a full tutorial on this, but I'll do a version here, so I'm going to go into my wings pre comp and I actually want to go into fast wings pre comp because the way that I do the wings and this was a frame by frame animation was that I drew a bunch of the frames in Photoshop.
00:06:03:26 - 00:06:28:00
Unknown
And then what I did is is that a sequence them and after effects now I can see them like that and then but because combined all those frames didn't make up like me, like 3 seconds, not even to me. Like, yeah, just like a, you know, couple couple of frames. I wanted to go on longer. So what I did was I made those into pre comps and now I'm in another pre comp.
00:06:28:11 - 00:06:54:21
Unknown
And what I'm going to be doing is I'm going to be clicking let's say I'm going to go from the bottom. So shift click the keyframes, the, the sorry, the layers in the order that you want them to be sequenced. Right click go to keyframe assistant and that is going to layer your keyframes. Exactly. So the plane sequence, so I'm going to add sequence layers just hit okay here.
00:06:55:03 - 00:07:20:12
Unknown
And you see that the line the up for me. So it will continue in one smooth transition. And this effect is great if you have a lot of hand-drawn animation frame by frame animation, really any animation that you want to play, one after another, splitting layers. All right. So for this one, move your play head to any particular point on the timeline and you know about like command control D, but I'll duplicate your layer.
00:07:20:21 - 00:07:35:29
Unknown
But if you hit shift command control D, you've split your layer over here and what you can do with that is I want to show you actually that the new layer has all the keyframes of the previous layer. So you can take those keyframes and you can add new ones if you want. You can mess around with them.
00:07:35:29 - 00:08:02:15
Unknown
And essentially here I'll play it for you. It's a great technique. Sorry, my computer voting a little slowly. It's a great technique. If you have like say, an effect where you want one layer, you know, let's say you have a hand reaching into a chip bag. So, you know, an animation like that, you can have the hand reaching into the chip bag, animate it and split the layer at such a point so it'll look like the hand is disappearing into the chip bag.
00:08:02:24 - 00:08:21:19
Unknown
And you can see that I can just really mess around with keyframes on this new layer over here. That's all for this tutorial. I hope you enjoyed learning these tricks of the trade in Adobe After Effects. This is going to be part one of a two part series of a series of There's only two parts. This is part one of something.
00:08:22:19 - 00:10:55:19
Unknown
If you have any questions or suggestions for future tutorials, let us know in the comments. Let us know if you have any motion graphics products that you're working on. We'd love to hear about them. This has been surprising since the mobile desktop, everyone. This is from mobile desktop. This is the second part of our two part series, Tricks of the Trade Tips and Tricks from Adobe.
00:10:55:19 - 00:11:26:17
Unknown
After Effects. So yeah, if you haven't seen our first half, we'll link that below in the description. Either way, let's get started. All right. Looping. So I'm going to actually go back to our shape layer here. You see, I've made the square and I have it animated so that it basically goes from one point to another. Now, I've typed in an expression here, so you're going to hit alt on the stopwatch and you're going to type in, loop out the program will want to finish that for you.
00:11:26:18 - 00:11:46:04
Unknown
So, you know, by all means. And what that's going to do is that if I continue playing the animation in my computer loads, you'll see that it's looping that animation for me. Now there's different kinds of loops I can put in ping pong that'll be a different one. Ping pong makes it go back and forth, back and forth.
00:11:46:18 - 00:12:09:01
Unknown
Now for a more in-depth look at loops, we have a full tutorial on that. I believe it's under name looping expressions. Pretty self-explanatory, but yeah, that's like a quick version of it. There's all sorts of different kinds of loops. So, you know, check that out. All right, quick pin. So let's say I've got my slick tool selected and I want to move around my interface.
00:12:09:01 - 00:12:26:07
Unknown
So you hold down spacebar and it allows you to click and drag and you can pop right back to whatever tool you were using beforehand without committing to a tool. So yeah, that'll work for like the PAN tool. It'll work for the pendulum holding down G for the pen tool. I let go no longer using the pen tool.
00:12:26:28 - 00:12:47:17
Unknown
This will work if you have like rotoscope on, but for the most part it'll work in most interfaces. Oh, zooming in and out. So to zoom out you hit come on your keyboard is zoom in is period. So that's a good one. So I'm going to be using a different product for this one just because I need something with vector illustrator files in it.
00:12:47:17 - 00:13:08:12
Unknown
This is another one for our social media accounts. This is for closing per tutorial. Let me hide from these textures. So I'm going to go over to one of my vector layers here. I'm actually going to zoom in, so I want to pretend to the mouse and the glasses over here and you can see they're like a little raggedy, a little bit.
00:13:08:21 - 00:13:32:02
Unknown
Don't pay attention to like the big line around the head that's on purpose. But the like the mouse in particular, I want you to look at. So it's a bit like sharper edges, some of the stuff. Now, if you can't see these switches, you want to hit toggle switches and modes till you see like these little icons. And the continuously raster button is this little stone over here.
00:13:32:08 - 00:13:56:14
Unknown
Now it works differently on two different kinds of layers. Now for Illustrator like vector, you know, vector files, if I hit this, what it's going to be doing is going it's going to be continuously cleaning up and displaying my vector in high definition. Now, the thing about that is, well, that in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing.
00:13:56:14 - 00:14:11:15
Unknown
It does take up a lot of memory. So, you know, it's good for like a preview if you want to know what it's going to look like at the very end. But yeah, if you keep an eye out, you can see that it is smoothing out some of my edges here. Yeah. You know, little alien's getting a little a little smoother.
00:14:12:00 - 00:14:36:00
Unknown
And now for its other use for 3D layers, which we have to drill on that. And so this animation here is part of our 3D series After Effects does have 3D capabilities. So yeah, check out that series as well. And so this pizza box is made using after effects is a 3D or 2.5 DX, if you will, capabilities.
00:14:36:09 - 00:15:00:00
Unknown
So the pizza of this red layer over here is that 3D layer. Now if you have this switched on on a suit like a collection of 3D layers, it collapses all those transformations that you can see and animates, but it doesn't carry over the 3D qualities of that particular project. All right, back to our hummingbird. We're almost done.
00:15:00:00 - 00:15:18:14
Unknown
So I'm going to show you how to export an Apple Alpha channel. It's about that, which basically means exporting with transparency. Now, let's say I don't want my background here. I'm going to click it off. It's just going to be this black background. If you want to know it's transparent and after effects, you can hit this over here.
00:15:18:15 - 00:15:47:15
Unknown
See this right at the bottom of the window is the toggle transparency grid. Everything that's checkered is going to be transparent, which means if I put this animation over a different background, that background will show will then show. Now there's a few file formats that support transparency. First things first, let's go to composition. I'm going to go to we're going to go to composition and to Adobe Media Media Encoder cue.
00:15:48:10 - 00:16:10:08
Unknown
Now over here, I'm going to click the format. All right. Now that I've got my settings open here, I'm going to select page as a format, and I'm going to select page with Alpha. Now, there are different presets, different formats that support transparency, so I would recommend looking up a list. People compile them here and there. I'm going to hit.
00:16:10:08 - 00:16:30:24
Unknown
Okay, I'm going to get this to render right now back and after Effects, I'm going to import my latest. So I chose pages sequence. So it's going to come at it like all these individual frames and then you hit page sequence when you're importing it. If you if you exported it differently, it's not going to be a big deal.
00:16:30:24 - 00:16:59:29
Unknown
All right. Let's turn that background so you can see and I have transparency in our new export. Now, lastly, let me show you how to export a single frame. So we're going to go to composition. See frame is file output model. I'm going to test Photoshop and I'm going to just hit render and find the output within your product file.
00:16:59:29 - 00:17:17:03
Unknown
That's all for this tutorial. I hope you enjoyed learning these tricks of the trade in Adobe after Effects. If you haven't seen part one, we will try to remember to link it below.
