Learn Adobe XD Fundamentals for UI & UX Design

Adobe XD is a modern design app that was built with the specific needs of a modern web designer, UX designer, or app designer in mind. Unlike image editing programs such as Photoshop—which were originally created for print, photo retouching, or illustration—the entire focus of Adobe XD is on designing user interfaces and user experiences. You can craft the visuals and turn them into working prototypes all in a single app!

XD uses artboards, so you can efficiently design web layouts for mobile, tablet, and desktop (or screens for apps). It’s vector-based, so you can scale for a variety of screen sizes with ease, as well as export hi-res (Retina) graphics for the web or apps. You’ll find tools and features specifically relevant to UI (User Interface) design and UX (User Experience) design, such as components (symbols), repeat grids, built-in prototyping tools, and much more.

  • With artboards and layout guides, you can design on popular grid systems (like Bootstrap), making it easier to design responsive webpages.
  • Turn your designs into clickable prototypes quickly and easily. You can create prototypes directly in XD and share them with users or developers.
  • Export specs to give your web developer so they can inspect a layout for size, colors, fonts, spacing, copy CSS code, and more—all from a web browser without having to own XD.

UI Design (Visual Design) Applications
  • Figma and Sketch are design apps used by UX and UI designers. Not only can you create your visual designs (for website, apps, etc.), but you can even turn them into working prototypes to show clients and do user testing with. Sketch is a Mac only app, while Figma works on Mac and Windows (it works in any web browser). Figma has very good prototyping features (better than Sketch) and you can even incorporate some animation with them.
  • Photoshop is a photo editor with design features. Web designers who had used Photoshop have turned to Figma or Sketch which were created solely for the purpose of UI (Visual) and UX design. They still use Photoshop though for editing photos used in their designs.
User Interface (UI) Design
  • Design that focuses on how users experience and interact with a variety of products from websites and software applications to computers, appliances, machines, and mobile devices.
  • The goal of user interface design is to make it as simple and efficient as possible for users to accomplish their goals—what is often called user-centered design.
User Experience (UX) Design
  • User Experience (UX) involves a person’s behaviors, attitudes, and emotions about using a particular product, system, or service.
  • Includes the practical, experiential, emotional, meaningful, and valuable aspects of human-computer interaction and product ownership.
  • Considers a person’s perceptions of system aspects such as utility, ease of use, and efficiency.
  • UX is important because of the increased emphasis on user-centered design. It’s not about what the client wants, it’s what the user needs and wants.
