Founders Jim Stewart, Porter Schutt, and Ben DuPont launched Zip Code Wilmington in September 2015 intending to fill corporate IT jobs in Wilmington with local Delaware talent. Zip Code Wilmington is Delaware’s first coding school and is also one of the first nonprofit coding schools in the country.

Zip Code’s curriculum was developed with direct input from corporate partners to ensure individuals are trained in the skills employers need in entry-level developers. Coursework is centered around Java, which provides individuals with the opportunity to immerse themselves in a program designed to launch their careers as software developers. In as little as three months, students gain the experience and skills needed to join a high-paying career path in tech.

What Classes Are Available?

Zip Code’s 12-week bootcamps teach individuals the ins and outs of software development and data engineering with an additional focus on professional development. Individuals exit the courses with a background that helps them to adopt almost any coding language and succeed at any company.

Zip Code Wilmington’s Java Course teaches the basics of computational thinking, languages such as Java, TypeScript, and JavaScript, tools such as JUnit and Maven, frameworks such as Spring Boot and Hibernate, and real-world skills such as Code Reviews and Project Planning just to name a few.

The Data Analytics and Engineering course teaches the basics of data engineering, languages such as Python, R, and SQL, frameworks such as Pandas and Numpy, and Pipelines such as Apache Spark and Apache Airflow.

Class Formats

Zip Code Wilmington’s courses have three cohorts per year with Java classes averaging 15-30 students and data classes averaging 10-15 students. Courses are offered in-person only, and students attend classes on campus Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Additionally, there are guest speakers from corporate partners twice per week at 8 am, as well as occasional required evening events for networking. Students are also expected to complete labs, reading assignments, group projects, and other work outside of class hours.

Zip Code is an immersive learning environment, and students may be expected to dedicate up to 100 hours per week in order to succeed in the program. Due to the intense time commitment, it is advised that students do no work while attending Zip Code.

Admissions Process

Zip Code Wilmington’s application process is multi-step and typically takes up to 12 weeks from the time of submission to receive an acceptance decision. Previous coding experience is not required to apply, but admission screeners look for a baseline coding aptitude on Zip Code’s admissions assessment. Zip Code provides applicants with resources to familiarize themselves with the fundamentals and coding skills necessary to be considered for the program. Individuals interested in applying must have a high school diploma or GED and pass a criminal background check.

Individuals begin the application process by filling out Zip Code’s application and completing pre-assessment work, followed by an assessment. The assessment is taken online and is approximately 200 minutes long. Individuals must complete the assessment in one sitting and meet a benchmark score to move forward in the process.

Those who successfully meet the assessment benchmark are invited to schedule a 45-minute group interview. Throughout the interview, individuals participate with three to four other applicants in group activities. Individuals who are selected to move forward after the group interview are contacted to schedule one-on-one professional and whiteboard tech interviews with Zip Code’s Executive Director and Director of Education. Finally, the admissions manager will contact applicants who have completed their final interviews with a decision.

Pricing & Payment Options

The total cost of Zip Code Wilmington’s program is $12,000. Students pay $6,000 upfront and the remainder of the tuition costs are forgiven if a graduate is hired by one of Zip Code Wilmington’s corporate partners and stays employed for 26 weeks. Those who are not hired by one of Zip Code Wilmington’s corporate partners are responsible to pay the remainder of the tuition once they have gained full-time employment.

Zip Code does not have any payment plans, but they do offer a needs-based scholarship to assist students in paying the initial $6,000. Students who apply for this scholarship must be able to prove that their household has earned less than 200% of the national poverty level. These students may also qualify to receive a monthly stipend. Candidates may apply for financial assistance once they have been accepted into the program and provide proper documentation.

Active duty military service members, reservist military members, veterans, or spouses of active duty or reservist military service members could be eligible to receive a full scholarship from Interdigital.

Career Support Services

Students receive career support during and after their coursework. Zip Code works with students on professional development throughout the entire 12-week course. This includes learning resume writing, managing social media/LinkedIn profiles, networking skills, and interview prep.

After the course is over, Zip Code schedules interviews for students with its partner companies. Zip Code distributes student resumes to its corporate partners and partners choose students they would like to interview. There is a scheduled interview day where potential employers come to Zip Code’s facility to interview students. Students who don’t get placed with one of Zip Code’s corporate partners continue to receive job placement assistance to help them find paid employment. Students are free to work with any employers but only Zip Code’s employer partners have agreed to repay the remainder of students' tuition costs.

Alumni Outcomes

Each year, Zip Code Wilmington releases an outcomes report to provide transparent information when it comes to alumni outcomes and job statistics. In 2021, over six in ten graduates were placed in paid roles within one year of graduating using the skills they gained at Zip Code Wilmington. In addition, 100% of students enrolled in the program graduated, and over half of all graduates were placed in paid full-time employment within six months of completing the program.

According to the report, graduates of Zip Code Wilmington typically double their average salary after graduating. Before graduating from Zip Code Wilmington, the average salary for an individual was $26,700, and that average increased to nearly $75,000 after graduation.
