Yellow Tail Tech was co-founded by Jubee Vilceus and Paloma Rivera in 2014. Their passion is to take students who have no background in IT and give them the education they need to land an exciting and high-paying career in as little as six months; in fact, 90% of their graduates have no prior experience. Yellow Tail specializes in Linux and AWS and has been able to help its students land competitive and high-paying jobs not long after graduation. They offer instruction from certified industry professionals who have years of experience.

School Locations

Yellow Tail Tech has one location in Silver Spring, Maryland which is a little over thirty minutes outside of Baltimore. The school is located just off of the Capital Beltway in the Hillandale neighborhood, an upscale suburban area.

What Classes Are Available?

Yellow Tail Tech has two programs available. The first is a Linux for Jobs program where students are given the tools to be a DevOps System Engineer with Linux. This program is deliberately set at a slower pace so that students with no experience are better able to grasp the fundamentals and have more time practicing their skills. This course is broken down into three modules. The first is IT Infrastructure and Networking, which will provide you with the basic tools and vocabulary needed to start your career. The second is Linux for Jobs. This section focuses on how to navigate the Linux operating system and teaches more about security, storage, user administration, etc. The final module is Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) Prep. This prepares students for their RHCSA certification exam and allows for additional practice with problem-solving.

The other program available at Yellow Tail Tech is their AWS for Jobs course. This course is taught in five modules and aims to teach students how to work with applications and systems on the AWS platform. The first two are similar to the Linux for Jobs courses; they start with IT and Networking and Linux System Administration. The next two sections cover AWS for Jobs and AWS SysOps Certification Prep. Again, these courses are slowly paced on purpose so that students can learn to effectively build their code on AWS and gain the certifications they need to be successful. The final module relates to Python Automation, which is a basic level of coding that is used to help automate tasks in AWS.

Class Formats

Courses at Yellow Tail Tech are only available remotely at this time. Classes are taught in a hybrid format; partly self-taught and part traditional classroom features. Students review video material and complete assignments before class, then spend their class time clarifying concepts and asking questions. Yellow Tail also believes strongly in a model where all students are learning at the same pace; they feel it is important to have a peer group you can rely on and who are all going through the same things.

Admissions Process

The application and admissions process at Yellow Tail Tech is less traditional than other programs. They offer to admit students based on a selection process designed to determine whether the program can appropriately meet your needs as a student and whether you would be able to complete the program.

The first step for interested students is to schedule a Career Strategy Session with an admissions team member. This is a 45-minute Zoom meeting with enrollment representatives where you can share your career goals, level of experience, and any barriers you feel would hinder your success in the program. Knowing these goals will help you and the team identify an appropriate career track. If, after this session, both you and the enrollment team agree that Yellow Tail Tech can help you meet your goals, admission will be offered.

Pricing & Payment Options

The AWS program at Yellow Tail Tech costs $12,900 and the Linux program is $8,884. Financing options are available and can be discussed during the career counseling session mentioned above. Yellow Tail does not participate in any Income Share Agreement programs, nor do they offer any scholarships.

Students who do not land a job within five months of finishing their internship are eligible for a full refund of their tuition, provided they meet certain criteria. They must have attended every live classroom session, completed all assignments, and scored 70% or higher on all exams.

Career Support Services

The jobs program at Yellow Tail Tech includes an eight-week internship enrollment where students are assigned tech support tickets in an office environment and learn how to solve real-world problems with their new skills. Yellow Tail also prides itself on its personalized career coaching. Not every student receives the same treatment, because not every student has the same goals. Instead, they help students create a personalized plan and use their many partnerships in the industry to help you find a position that will lead you closer to achieving your goals.
