When Tobia De Angelis first pitched his plan for Strive School to Y Combinator, he described the venture as “the Lambda School of Europe.” De Angelis co-founded the school in 2019 after he found himself struggling to learn coding through the available online platforms. Diego Banovaz, a software engineering educator and De Angelis’s mentor, joined forces with De Angelis to establish the school in Berlin. Banovaz and De Angelis struggled in the early months of running Strive School, and De Angelis reports almost shutting the school down three times. After both co-founders participated in a Y Combinator summer program, Strive School is now backed by the startup accelerator. With its Income Share Agreement tuition model and up-to-date curriculum, Strive School aims to close the gap between university education and tech careers for aspiring European coders.

School Locations

Strive School operates out of the Berlin location of Factory, a German coworking and networking center organization situated in central Berlin. However, all of Strive School’s courses are fully online, and, while students are welcome to participate in the in-person co-working culture, it is not a requirement of any of the courses.

What Classes Are Available?

Students at Strive School can choose among four different classes: Full Stack web development, Front End web development, the shorter part-time Web Development course, and Data Science. Both the Full Stack and Web Development courses teach students HTML, CSS, JavaScript, APIs, and the MERN stack: MongoDB, ExpressJS, ReactJS, and NodeJS. The Full Stack web development course familiarizes students with a few additional languages and libraries, including Mongoose, Postgres, Redux, SQL, and TypeScript, while Web Development students learn NoSQL instead of SQL. Front End web development students also focus on HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, along with ReactJS, Redux, and TypeScript, while also gaining experience in Vercel. Data Science students use Python, Flask, NodeJS, and SQL while learning about data visualization, machine learning, deep learning, and their applications in software engineering.

Class Formats

All courses at Strive School are offered live online with some on-demand aspects for students who benefit from learning at their own pace. The Full Stack, Front End, and Data Science courses run on a full-time schedule, Monday through Friday, for 24, 15, and 16 weeks, respectively. The Web Development course is a 28-week part-time class; live sessions run during the evenings, Monday through Friday, with the expectation that students also code on their own time. The curriculum blends theory and practice. Students attend live lectures and sessions with guest speakers. Students produce multiple applied projects throughout their course and work independently as well as on paired programming and in team projects, including a capstone project. Courses are taught in English, though the school does not expect English fluency from its students.

Admissions Process

Application to any of Strive School’s courses begins with an online application, including a short essay about the student’s interest in Strive School, and a 20-minute “benchmark test” to assess students’ aptitude for coding logic. After the quiz, the admissions team schedules an interview with the student to go over their assessment results. Strive School advertises that their courses are beginner-friendly and suitable for anyone 18 years and older.

Pricing & Payment Options

Strive School operates on an Income Share Agreement model for tuition. Students pay €990 to €1.990 upfront. Once they are working full-time in the industry, students start repaying tuition at a rate of 12% of their monthly income until the full cost of tuition has been repaid, for a total cost of €7.000 to €9.990. Students also have the option of paying the full cost of tuition upfront. If a graduate does not receive a full-time job offer within 12 months of graduation, Strive School waives the cost of tuition.

Career Support Services

Career coaching is integrated into the course curriculum for all Strive School classes, and students work with career coaches to develop their application materials and interviewing skills. The final unit of each course includes a major capstone project and education in career development. Throughout their chosen course, students also connect with the guest speakers to develop their professional networks.
