Rithm School is best known for its full-time coding bootcamp. The bootcamp runs for 16 weeks and its aim is to offer students a complete education in web development.
Students will start with a prework session that includes the basics of development. The curriculum for the prework period entails CSS, HTML, Terminal, UNIX, Git and Github, Bootstrap, and Intermediate JavaScript I.
Once the bootcamp begins, students will learn different types of web development in two-week intervals, starting with front end development. In the first two weeks of the bootcamp, students will delve into multiple levels of JavaScript instruction that is crafted to help learners start to think like developers.
In the next two weeks, the course focuses on full stack development. This part of the bootcamp will focus on all levels of Python training. Students will learn to build web servers and databases using PostgresSQL. The curriculum also includes teaching students two levels of SQL and Flask.
In weeks six through ten, students will begin learning more about frameworks and design patterns. They will be taught how to utilize React Router, TypeScript, Node.js, and other tools for back end technology. Amazon Web Services deployment will also be taught during this portion of the bootcamp.
As an added step to training, students will take about three weeks to engage in real-world professional projects that they can add to their portfolios. Learners work with businesses local to the San Fransisco area on various projects that are geared towards augmenting their knowledge of writing code and working on a development team.
The final three weeks of the bootcamp involve cementing the students’ knowledge of computer science. They’ll review the over 100 coding lessons they’ve done throughout the bootcamp and review topics such as algorithms, Big O Notation, and data. Students will also work on their resumes and have one-on-one sessions with instructors to prepare for interviews. Rithm School will also add students to their partner network to help new graduates of bootcamp get a head start on their job search.
Rithm School offers in-person instruction at the student’s choice. Students may also do hybrid training 100% online and come in for scheduled in-person advising sessions. Rithm School notes that whether a student chooses total online instruction or in-person instruction, their learning will not be impacted.
Students who seek a part-time experience are encouraged to explore Rithm School’s Springboard Software Engineering Bootcamp that they’ve developed in partnership with Colt Steele.
Rithm School believes in smaller learning cohorts and caps the number of students in each cohort at 18, a 6:1 student-to-instructor ratio. That way, students are more likely to receive individualized attention to be successful throughout the course.
In order to test the students’ competency, assessments are given throughout the first ten weeks. However, there is no final exam needed for completion.
Admission to Rithm School’s bootcamp entails several steps, the first of which is to submit an application. After an application is submitted, prospective students will need to schedule a time to speak with a representative from the school.
Once the application is submitted, the applicant will be sent an email with a short coding challenge. The purpose of this exercise is to gauge the prospective learner’s comfort with the basics of JavaScript.
After the prospective student receives the challenge, at some point, they will have their first conversation with someone from the Rithm School team. In the meantime, there is an optional prep course that is free of charge that may help applicants perform better in the last step of the admissions process: the technical interview.
The technical interview focuses less on what tech knowledge the applicant may or may not have and moreso on the applicant’s problem-solving methods.
The cost of Rithm School is $24,000. However, the school offers tuition payment options for those who are interested in training with them.
The first option is that students pay a $1,000 deposit and then pay the balance ($23,000) at enrollment or split the balance into two payments. The first payment would be due on the first day of class and the second payment would be due on the first day of the seventh week of class. This option includes a $500 installment fee.
The second option is for students to pay the $1,000 deposit and then enter into an Income Share Agreement (ISA) with the school. Under the ISA, the student agrees to allot 17% of their post-completion salary per month to pay their tuition. The arrangement under the ISA runs for 24 months. ISAs are capped so that the most the student will end up paying is $34,500. However, this option is not available to residents of New York.
Students may also choose to take out a loan to attend the bootcamp. Rithm School has partnered with Ascent Funding to provide loans.
Lastly, Rithm School offers a partial scholarship for those who pay at least half of their tuition. The scholarships have traditionally been based on need, merit, or diversity. Students can apply for the scholarship after they are accepted to the program.
Rithm School has a network of over 100 companies that students have access to once they enter the bootcamp. In addition to interview preparation in the last two weeks of the bootcamp, students are paired with a mentor who has already completed the program and may be able to advocate for the student during their job search.
Rithm School even has a Career Services Manager that graduates can consult with at any time. Students will also have access to Slow Ventures, a venture capital firm that partners with Rithm School. Their portfolio of 120 companies of various sizes is available to students as a job search resource.
According to Rithm School, over 94% of the students who enroll in its bootcamp graduate. Over 65% of graduates find employment within three months, 82% within six months, and 100% within nine months. The average starting salary of graduates is $107,000.
Graduates of the bootcamp go on to work for some of the top companies in the world including Google, Facebook, and X (formerly known as Twitter). They also work at companies that are not necessarily known for tech but for which tech is a prominent component of business operations such as The New York Times, General Motors, and Square.
Many students who have gone through the Rithm School bootcamp have expressed a high level of satisfaction with their experience. A common theme on third-party review sites is the number of people who did not have a background in software development or other tech fields but enrolled in the bootcamp to change careers.
One reviewer noted that after desiring to change his career track, he enrolled in Rithm School and it was “one of the best decisions” of his life. Another similar reviewer left a biochemistry career to attend Rithm School and briefly discussed how the bootcamp would have been their first choice if given the chance. Several of the other reviewers also praised the availability of the career services support that the school provided them and how uncomplicated the job search process was because of it.
Although negative reviews for the school are rare, some students expressed a concern that although the class sizes are small, it was still hard to get one-on-one assistance from their instructors when they needed it. Another graduate noted that during the project portion of the bootcamp, instructors were often spread thin in order to prepare for upcoming cohorts. The comparative cost of Rithm School was also mentioned as a concern.
