PDX Code Guild: Find Top Courses & Training Locations

PDX Code Guild offers an introductory course to students who want to learn more but aren’t sure if programming is right for them. Students will learn Python first before moving on to JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS5. They will learn full stack development using Python’s Django framework.

PDX Code Guild is an immersive web development training program located in Portland, Oregon. The program was founded in 2013 by CEO Sheri Dover. After working in the tech startup scene for several years, her program was developed to meet a quickly growing need for talented web developers. By offering a series of fast-paced bootcamp experiences, PDX Code Guild has the goal of allowing students to maximize their learning in a relatively short time.

School Locations

PDX Code Guild has one location in Portland, Oregon. The school is just off the highway and not far from the city center. It is conveniently located near public transportation, coffee shops, gyms, and public parks. Every course from PDX Code Guild is also available live online.

What Classes Are Available?

PDX Code Guild offers a small handful of immersive courses designed for beginning programmers who want to jump-start their knowledge and quickly enter the job market as full stack web developers.

The Programming 101/102 course is specifically designed for beginning programmers and is a prerequisite for all of the other courses offered by PDX Code Guild. This course lasts five days a week for two weeks.

The full stack courses provide extensive training in Python, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS over a few short months. The full stack courses have both day and evening options to provide additional flexibility for students. The day course is 14 weeks long while the evening course lasts for 18 weeks. Both full stack courses end with a full stack web application development capstone project to incorporate everything you’ve learned. Industry partners consistently praise these projects as being highly advanced.

If you want to learn more upon completing the full stack course, PDX Code Guild offers an Advanced JavaScript course. This course is reserved for graduates of the full stack bootcamp and focuses specifically on the MERN stack. The part-time course is 11 weeks long and is only offered in the evenings.

The full stack day, full stack evening, and advanced JavaScript courses are all licensed by Oregon’s Higher Education Coordinating Commission.

Class Formats

In-person classes are offered at the PDX Code Guild location in downtown Portland. All of the courses can also be completed remotely from anywhere in the world. Whether you attend in-person or virtually, the class size typically hovers between 8-12 students. The lectures are live so students can interact with the instructors in real-time and get their questions answered quickly. PDX Code Guild prides itself on small class sizes to ensure each student gets the attention they need. Students also frequently work in pairs or groups to complete lab work and programming exercises.

Admissions Process

The admissions process for PDX Code Guild begins with completing the contact form so an advisor can reach out to you and learn more about your goals through an informal interview. Next, the school offers a free Programming 101 course as a prerequisite before submitting a formal application. After completing the initial programming course, students are welcome to apply to one of the full stack programs.

Pricing & Payment Options

As previously mentioned, the Programming 101 course is offered for free before officially applying. There is also a second two-week programming bootcamp, which costs $620. The full stack courses range in price from $17,600 to $18,400 for the full tuition. However, these can be significantly reduced through either need-based or diversity scholarships. Over half of the students who have attended have qualified for some type of financial aid. Third-party grants are also available to qualified applicants which can help further discount tuition costs on top of the discounts already available through scholarships.

PDX Code Guild also offers a variety of flexible funding options to make its programs more affordable. They have payment plans, cash-pay discounts, and layaway options to support prospective students with their tuition. Veterans can use their GI Bill to attend this program and also qualify for a monthly housing allowance while attending the full stack program and/or the advanced JavaScript program.

Career Support Services

At PDX Code Guild, there is a Career Services Specialist on staff who is available to help through 1-on-1 counseling sessions or weekly Career Club meetups. The specialist can help with things like interview preparation, resume building, and LinkedIn navigation. Additionally, alumni are frequently invited to study hall sessions and all other events hosted by PDX Code Guild.

Alumni Outcomes

In their first year out of bootcamp, PDX Code Guild graduates typically make between $45,000 and $95,000. Their annual salary normally rises after working in the field for a few more years. Portland in particular has a very high demand for programmers, so most graduates of the program will be able to find employment even if their search takes them a few months. Graduates of this program have found careers in software testing, engineering, web development, and deployment. Over 200 graduates reported finding employment at fairly high-profile companies such as Nike, Verizon, and New Relic, Inc.

Former students particularly appreciate the small class sizes, which instantly creates a supportive environment and also allows for instructors to get to know your approach to problem-solving. Although the program is often described as “intense,” the environment is consistently praised as supportive and welcoming. One former student mentioned that the best part of the program was having recruiters and other industry leaders come to classes regularly. Students feel that they are offered plenty of networking opportunities throughout this program.

While most students provided positive feedback, some feel topics such as debugging and testing should be covered more in-depth. They recognize that a bootcamp environment doesn’t allow for all topics to receive equal attention, but some students did feel that this was a gap in their knowledge once they entered the workforce.

Cons of PDX Code Guild

There is only one location available for in-person instruction, which may be prohibitive for people who learn best in a classroom setting.
Students who enroll in the program outside the Portland area are also unable to take advantage of the community resources that PDX Code Guild is known for.
The limited scope of coursework does not include marketing and design, which could limit employment opportunities after graduation.
