Highway Education is a school that specializes in teaching marketing operations. The program is full-time, and all classes are conducted online.
Highway Education is an online school with a single, 16-week full-time program. The school teaches marketing operations in a curriculum designed in conjunction with major corporations. The school’s first cohort’s employment rate is 100%.
Highway Education is an online school founded in 2021 by entrepreneur Toby Murdock with the set goal of teaching students to gain employment in marketing operations. The school is incorporated as a benefit corporation. It has in its mission statement the resolve to serve “as a bridge between underemployed young adults and talent-seeking marketing employers and in doing so [to generate] greater opportunity and prosperity.” As expressed by Murdock, the school's philosophy is that higher education is too costly and doesn’t serve students well enough when it comes to beginning a remunerative career. Murdock’s experience lies in marketing operations innovation; he organized the school to match his area of expertise.
Highway Education is a fully online school, with daily virtual live classes taught to a cohort of students located around the country.
Highway Education is extremely specialized and teaches only one subject: marketing operations (or marketing ops.) The field is concerned principally with the technical aspects of marketing. Marketing ops is a multifaceted field that lies at the nexus point of any large marketing department.
Highway Education’s marketing ops course runs full-time for 16 weeks. There are lecture sessions twice daily, one in the morning and the other in the early afternoon, between which students have time to work on assignments and access the faculty for assistance.
The curriculum is broken down into eight two-week modules, beginning with an introduction to marketing and marketing operations and ending with advanced topics that include lead nurturing and scoring. Between those two modules, the curriculum takes in fundamental business skills, high-level marketing strategy, analytics, data, campaign planning and execution, and lead flow and management. The curriculum was designed in tandem with employers so that the skills taught are precisely those companies seek. Whence the narrow focus of Highway Education’s one-subject curriculum.
Classes are conducted entirely online, and students must be available to attend class twice daily. All class materials are included. Students work on projects both individually as well as in teams (preparing them for real-life work situations), although results are always judged in terms of the individual. Each cohort is limited to 18 students.
There is also a Highway Prep Course, an online (on-demand) teaching experience that gives prospective students a foretaste of the full program.
The admissions process is somewhat rigorous to ensure that the students accepted are good fits for the program and careers in marketing operations. There are no prerequisites beyond a high school diploma. Prospective students must first complete an initial application and problem-solving and quantitative reasoning assessment. Upon approval of the application, Highway will schedule an interview with the prospective student and then contact a reference of the applicant’s choosing. If all those steps are completed satisfactorily, the student is made an offer to enroll in the course.
The price of the program is $16,000, payable in advance. Financing is available through an Income Sharing Agreement. The student pays a $2,000 deposit, and the remaining tuition is deferred until the student is employed and makes more than $55,000 annually. Do note that the deferred plan can result in the program costing as much as $23,000, albeit payable over up to eight years.
If graduates fail to find employment at a minimum annual salary of $55,000, nothing is owed, and all fees and deposits collected will be refunded.
Unlike many other bootcamps, Highway Education brings employers to students rather than vice versa. (Indeed, in some cases, employers have paid fees to Highway to help locate new hires.) Graduates report that the school obviated the job search process entirely, which acted as a liaison between high-level employers and the students.
In addition to the efforts on the part of the school to bring employment opportunities to the students, students receive 1-to-1 mentors who work with them as they complete the program.
Within 180 days of graduation, 100% of all graduates had secured in-field employment with a median salary of $61,000. Do bear in mind that the sample size is limited to the initial cohort of 11 students.
Student response to Highway Education’s classes appears uniformly positive. One student wrote: “the curriculum is very well thought-out, along with lots of hands-on projects that help you really learn how to implement what you learn in class.” Another commented that the school provides “great resources between the multiple teachers who are always available to help you, as well as your own experienced mentor” and that “the program does an amazing job of setting you up with lots of interviews with very solid companies.”
