Galvanize provides students with full-time or part-time courses, workshops, and specialized enterprise courses they can choose from. Galvanize campuses also serve as a base for individuals, startups, and companies that are looking to accelerate their productivity and innovation. Galvanize also prides themselves on their learning community and trained faculty teams.

When Jim Deters founded Galvanize in his adopted home Denver in 2011, a coding school was only part of his big plans for the organization. Deters described his business model as “community, curriculum, and capital” as his campus aimed to bring together investors, employers, and students under the same roof in an augmented co-working space. Himself a serial entrepreneur, Deters brought his experience founding businesses in the software industry as well as the food service industry to his vision for Galvanize. For his work in bringing innovative business to the state, ColoradoBiz magazine named Deters its 2015 Entrepreneur of the Year. Galvanize expanded across Colorado and the US, and in 2018 acquired Hack Reactor, adopting the school’s curriculum across all Galvanize campuses. Deters exited the business the same year, but Galvanize is still going strong, and in 2020 was acquired by the education management organization K12, now called Stride.

School Locations

Galvanize started in Denver, Colorado, and the organization maintains another Colorado campus in Boulder. The school has education and co-working spaces in Austin, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Seattle, and education-only locations in Los Angeles and New York City. The co-working spaces are full-service and include amenities like cafes, kitchens, and wellness rooms, and all are dog-friendly.

Subjects Taught at Galvanize

Through Galvanize, students can learn web development and software engineering; depending on the course they take, they can also gain an introduction to data analysis and cybersecurity. What Classes Are Available?

Galvanize runs three Hack Reactor courses: Software Engineering Immersive, Software Engineering with JavaScript and Python, and a Prep course that helps students develop the JavaScript skills necessary to apply to the Software Engineering Immersive course. The Software Engineering courses both teach full stack web development, and both use JavaScript for the front end component of the course. Software Engineering Immersive also teaches back end development through JavaScript, whereas the new Software Engineering with JavaScript and Python course appropriately teaches the back end component of the course with Python. Software Engineering with JavaScript and Python also gives students an introduction to data management and DevSecOps.

Class Formats

Galvanize offers a range of class formats so that students can pick the one that is right for them. All courses at Galvanize can be taken live online. The Prep course also has a free on-demand option for self-driven students. Both Software Engineering courses are offered in-person at Galvanize campuses. The Prep course and Software Engineering Immersive can both be taken part-time, and Software Engineering Immersive and Software Engineering with JavaScript and Python both have full-time options, though the course schedules differ. The full-time Software Engineering Immersive course is, as its title suggests, highly immersive and intensive, expecting significant time commitments from students across its 12-week run. The Software Engineering with JavaScript and Python course keeps a more typical business-hours schedule for its 19 weeks of instruction. Students learning to code through Galvanize complete applied learning projects as the curriculum is practice-oriented.

Admissions Process

Galvanize uses different application processes for all three of its courses. Students applying to the free Prep course can register instantly and start the course immediately; for the paid synchronous Prep course, students need only register and pay tuition. For the Software Engineering Intensive course, applicants must participate in a four-part process: a web application with essay questions, two basic abilities assessments, the Prep course, and an intensive JavaScript technical assessment. Because Software Engineering with JavaScript and Python starts with an introduction to JavaScript, the application process for this course replaces the JavaScript technical assessment with an admissions interview.

Pricing & Payment Options

The Prep course can be studied on-demand independently for free, or live with a cohort for $250. Both Software Engineering courses cost $17,980, which can be financed through one of the school’s financial partners or through an Income Share Agreement. The school also offers competitive full scholarships for eligible students from demographics that are underrepresented in STEM.

Throughout the Software Engineering courses, students develop their job search skills with the Galvanize career services team. With the support of career coaches, students polish their professional profiles, participate in Galvanize networking events, and practice their interviewing skills. Alumni can continue working with career services throughout their careers.

Alumni Outcomes

Galvanize advertises that, on average, their employed graduates earn an annual income of $80,000, and that their data science students now work at major corporations like American Express, Apple, Microsoft, and Tesla. Galvanize uses its own methodology for graduate outcomes reporting.
