DevPoint Labs: Find Top Courses & Training Locations

DevPoint Labs offer full and part-time courses in full-stack web development. This program is accredited and therefore eligible for financial aid. Veterans are also eligible to attend using their G.I. Bill benefits.

Passionate sushi-maker and Web Developer Christian Fuller founded DevPoint Labs in 2013. Today, DevPoint Labs follows his example, bringing together students from across the state to teach them the ins and outs of contemporary coding.

DevPoint Labs now works with the University of Utah Professional Education School to teach growing professionals the basics of web development. The program offers full-time and part-time courses in 11-week blocks, allowing students to pursue web development education on their own time.

The minds behind DevPoint Labs initially strove to create a bastion of learning within the coding community. Both 11-week projects pair expert instruction with group projects, mentorship opportunities, and hackathons to help students hone the software development expertise they’ll need to thrive in their chosen fields.

School Locations

Prior to 2020, DevPoint Labs had active campuses in Salt Lake City, Provo, and Las Vegas. Currently, the program’s full-time and part-time seminars are all streamed live. Students can participate in either the full-time or part-time program from the comfort of their homes.

Both of DevPoint Labs’ bootcamps teach:

This breadth of subjects keeps attending students knowledgeable when it comes to changes in the world of web development. What Classes Are Available?

DevPoint Labs offers two web development courses, each presented on its own schedule. The part-time course is designed for students who have work or familial commitments. Comparatively, the full-time course immerses students into all-day conversations about the basics of coding and creational best practices.

In many ways, the full-time and part-time classes are mirrors of one another. Both occur over 11-week blocks, with class sizes capping at 20 people. Similarly, both classes serve as digital bootcamps where students can learn various coding languages, including:

In both programs, instructors will break down students’ week-to-week education in roughly the same way. Students will spend their first four weeks learning about coding language basics, pagination, and nested routes. This block will conclude with the students’ first hackathon, giving them a chance to show off their new skills.

The next three weeks will introduce students to ReactJS and the complexity of APIs. Finally, the last three weeks of the course are used to break down Advanced Webpack and help students create their completed Project Portfolios.

The primary difference between the part-time and full-time classes is their intensity. The part-time courses offered through DevPoint Labs allow students to divide their focus between new web design techniques and their day-to-day responsibilities. Comparatively, full-time classes are a proper bootcamp, putting students through their paces with after-hours group projects and weekend readings.

Class Formats

While DevPoint Labs used to offer in-person classes in Salt Lake City, Provo, and Las Vegas, the program has since switched to a 100 percent online format. Students are still free to choose between its full-time and part-time programs. However, all classes are streamed live. Students attending classes in 2021 are expected to have a web camera and microphone on hand to participate in their daily workshops.

Both the full-time and part-time programs require participants to complete pre-program work, as assigned by their instructors, before the start of their classes. Once classes begin, students will undergo an intensive educational experience, with everything from basic coding to user experience (UX) education broken down over 11 weeks.

All of DevPoint Labs’ programs only allow 20 students to participate in each of their classes. This allows students, teachers, and TAs to get to know one another better. It also gives teachers more opportunities to customize their classes based on their students’ needs.

Admissions Process

To apply for a DevPoint Labs’ bootcamp, students must submit a one-page application through the program’s website. Students are expected to disclose basic personal information alongside their future ambitions in multi-choice application questions. The application’s three essay questions allow students to elaborate on their educational background, hobbies, and ambitions for DevPoint Labs’ bootcamps.

DevPoint Labs will then schedule an interview with students it can see thriving through either of its remote programs. Interview questions range from personal interests to students’ goals for their careers after participating in their preferred program. Students accepted into the DevPoint Labs program of their choice will receive more information about their teacher and course schedule via email.

Pricing & Payment Options

DevPoint Labs works to make both of its programs accessible to all interested students. The full-time bootcamp costs $11,000 in total. Comparatively, the program’s part-time bootcamp costs $5,500.

That said, DevPoint Labs makes scholarship options available to all of its attending cohorts. These scholarships include the Women in Tech Scholarship and the Opportunity in Tech Scholarship.

DevPoint Labs awards incoming students the Women in Tech Scholarship in honor of Grace Hopper. This scholarship encourages women to attend DevPoint Labs’ seminars and covers 50 percent of an attending student’s tuition.

In a similar vein, the Opportunity in Tech Scholarship strives to encourage students of different ages, religions, races, ethnic heritages, and education to participate in one of DevPoint Labs’ programs. Like the Women in Tech Scholarship, this award covers 50 percent of a student’s tuition fees.

Students are encouraged to apply for these scholarships by submitting a full application through the DevPoint Labs’ website. All interested students are required to answer essay questions about why they feel they’re among the best candidates for their scholarship of choice. Students should also submit a recommendation letter to contact@devpointlabs.com.

Finally, students who apply for a DevPoint Labs scholarship must be following the program on Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, or Facebook. Students who do not engage with the program on social media are not eligible for the school’s financial awards.

Career Support Services

Bootcamps like those offered through DevPoint Labs are about more than code competency. They’re also about career placement. That’s why DevPoint Labs integrates career support into its full-time and part-time workshops.

The program lets its students participate in mock interviews and event days designed to connect them with professionals in their industries. The program also hosts guest speakers and professionalism workshops. What’s more, each program wraps up with a DevPoint Labs Launch Day. This celebration of students’ accomplishments lets them show off their portfolio of work to their peers, industry professionals, and loved ones.

Alumni Outcomes

DevPoint Labs does not release an outcome report regarding its graduates’ success. That said, DevPoint Labs graduates on LinkedIn now primarily work in Media Marketing, Finance, and Professional Web Development.

Most of the DevPoint Labs’ current bootcamp reviews are glowing. They emphasize the wealth of information available through both full-time and part-time coursework, comparing it to a class offered on a traditional college campus. One student says, “I knew the smallest amount of HTML and CSS when I started and now I can build custom websites and web apps!” Several students even note that attending DevPoint Labs’ classes allowed them to transfer into more lucrative careers as soon as they graduated.

Graduated students do warn future attendees about DevPoint Labs’ trademark intensity. The majority of reviews note that pre-course work is mandatory if students want to keep up with the pace of individual lectures. That said, several reviews also note that teachers are willing to slow the pace of their classes if a student is falling behind.

Finally, some students do raise concerns over the program’s advertised career support. An anonymous student on Switchup notes that “[m]y biggest issue with this school was not so much the teachers or material (honestly they were awesome), but rather, the lack of support in career preparation….” Students may need to actively seek out the program’s career-oriented opportunities if they want to make the most of their time with the program.
