Deep Dive Coding: Find Top Courses & Training Locations

Deep Dive Coding bootcamps are affiliated with Central New Mexico Community College. These coding programs are non-credit programs, but students will receive a certificate and a digital credential based on blockchain technology. Students will also have a portfolio of work to show future employers.

In 2013, Computer Programmer John Mierza, of Albuquerque, New Mexico established Deep Dive Coding. He’d gotten the idea by reading an article in Inc. Magazine about the founding of Starter League, a coding bootcamp in Chicago, Illinois. Coding bootcamps were new at that time, and Mierza was inspired by this innovation in computer science education. What few programs existed were based in cities like the aforementioned Chicago, San Francisco, and New York City and typically lasted four to six years. Mierza decided, though, that his program would be different. Deep Dive Coding would train students—via intensive, accelerated bootcamps—all they’d need to know to begin successful careers in the lucrative coding industry, within a matter of weeks.

Deep Dive Coding’s first bootcamp was established in a brickwalled storefront near Route 66, Central and Broadway in Albuquerque. The first cohort consisted of six members including two pairs of fathers and sons. Before the first camp had even run its course, one of the cohort secured a position in the tech industry. Slowly but surely, Deep Dive Coding expanded. The company began work on projects for employers in the area, and before long had built a client base.

In 2014, Deep Dive Coding was acquired by the College of New Mexico’s newly founded organization, CNM Ingenuity. As a workforce management company, CNM Ingenuity strove to bolster economic development in both the private and public spheres, and Deep Dive Coding would help them to do that. Shortly after its acquisition, Deep Dive Coding became CNM Ingenuity’s flagship program.

The program received the 2019-2020 Excellence in Workforce Development Award from Albuquerque Economic Development. It was also the winning recipient of the Excellence in STEM Higher Ed Program, an honor bestowed by Air Force Research Lab.

School Locations

Deep Dive Coding has two sites: Albuquerque and Northwest Albuquerque, New Mexico. The school provides both full-time and part-time training camps. The bootcamps typically last around 10 to 12 weeks with the outliers being the three-week and 42-week courses. There are typically 14 to 16 students in each bootcamp. Deep Dive Coding strives to maintain a relatively low student-to-teacher ratio, allowing each student to receive individualized attention.

If you’re seeking to develop the necessary skills for a career in data science, web development, or cybersecurity engineering, consider Deep Dive Coding.

Deep Dive Coding offers a plentitude of design bootcamps, specially curated to meet the needs of students of varying skill levels. The school provides both full-time and part-time opportunities.

The full-time Full Stack Web Development course, for example, teaches the essentials of web development. Included in the instruction are lessons on the development of the JavaScript stack, as well as HTML, CSS, Git, MySQL, and software infrastructure. The 42-week, part-time Data Science Bootcamp focuses on the finer points of machine learning and data learning. At the end of their tenure, students of Deep Dive Coding are awarded the opportunity to demonstrate their newfound skills before a panel of prospective employers, and other industry-leading professionals.

Class Formats

What do prospective students need before diving into the program? Deep Dive Coding insists that the only things a student needs before joining are a laptop with an up-to-date operating system, an internet connection, rudimentary skills, and a drive to work, learn, and if necessary, fail forward.

The bootcamps require students to show up in person. The full-time bootcamps run the length of an average workday, and occur every day from Monday to Friday.

The bootcamps are accelerated, yet rigorous. They have been designed in such a way that all students, regardless of their entry point, can learn the languages necessary for developing websites, mobile applications, data science models, and IoT (Internet of Things) devices. The bootcamps presented differ in subject matter, but one thing that remains consistent across the board is the fact that each prioritizes only the most cutting-edge, and readily applicable practices.

The program also provides lucrative resources to its student body via professional development training and coaching practices that teach soft skills such as resume writing and personal branding. Throughout the semester students have the opportunity to attend lectures led by agents of some of the top software development companies in the area.

As students near the end of their time in the bootcamp, they are allowed to participate in the highly coveted Demo Day. On Demo Day, many of the key players in the software development industry gather at the College of New Mexico to watch as the students demonstrate their newfound skills and exhibit their portfolios.

Admissions Process

To gain entry to the program, prospective students start by filling out a general application form and answering questions about their personal development history and tech-industry aspirations. Students must detail their experience with coding and provide a portfolio showcasing samples of their work. The application is free to submit and can be completed in one sitting.

Once the application is submitted, it will take an average of two business days before someone from Deep Dive Coding reaches out to initiate the next step: the intake. The intake, in the form of a phone interview, is done so that an admissions advisor can accurately assess the prospective student’s familiarity with coding and/or digital media. The advisor hopes to learn that the student has a decent foundation of information, and is adequately enthused about the venture. Students may be turned away if the advisor feels that they are not yet ready to join Deep Dive Coding. The vast majority of assessments take place during the intake conversation, but the Data Science class also requires that prospective participants pass an entry test. If a student is approved by an advisor, they will be pushed forward in the application process. The student and their advisor then discuss the most appropriate bootcamp for the student.

Finally, tuition costs and payment plans are discussed. Once the initial payment is made and contractual obligations—on behalf of both parties—are squared away, the pre-work can begin. Pre-work consists of guided tutorials that are designed to help new students get acclimated to the coursework required of their particular bootcamp.

Pricing & Payment Options

Bootcamps in the Deep Dive Coding program differ when it comes to costs. Most of the full-time bootcamps fall within the $7,400 to $10,000 range. Most of the part-time bootcamps fall within the $1,000 to $3,000 price range, with the outliers being the Data Science Part-Time Bootcamp at $9,995 and the Data Science for Business Leaders Course at $499.

Entry to Deep Dive Coding requires an initial deposit of $1,500. Payments can be made on or before the established deadlines. Students who wish to make their payments before the deadlines are given the liberty of rescheduling the collection calls from the CNM cashier, allowing said students to be contacted as per their convenience, only.

If the student wishes to push back the second payment deadline, they can pay an extra $100, and have their deadline moved to the Friday before their first bootcamp begins.

Unfortunately, Deep Dive Coding students are not able to use Pell grants, or other traditional scholarships granted by the College of New Mexico to cover their tuition. There are, however, other means of financial assistance that many applicants will find helpful. Career Support Services

When it comes to professional development, Deep Dive Coding stands out by way of their Career Coaching initiative. Students receive help in developing their portfolios and refining their resumes. They are also asked to participate in mock interviews and professional development workshops designed to increase hireability. Students are given access to not only Deep Dive’s extensive network of alumni but to the software industry leaders who frequent the bootcamps.

Alumni Outcomes

As of 2021, Deep Dive Coding has an alumni pool of nearly 400 graduates with careers in software development and web development, IoT, data science, and digital media. Ninety percent of students matriculate from the 10-week programs, and these graduates typically go on to attain starting salaries of around $48,000 a year. As these graduates continue to refine their skills, their salaries increase, many to upwards of $60,000.

Half of all graduates attain their career goals within the first few months of graduation. A whopping 300 companies have already hired Deep Dive graduates. The bureau of labor statistics reports that the number of jobs available to software programmers will grow by nearly 20% in the coming decade. It is no wonder, then, why the outcome for graduates of the Deep Dive Coding Bootcamps trend in this positive direction.

Many Deep Dive graduates have chosen to take things a step further, and rather than waiting on demand to increase, found their niche. Twenty-four new independent businesses now exist because Deep Dive graduates have found the means of capitalizing on the knowledge gained in the bootcamps.

Reviews of Deep Dive Coding land mostly on the positive end of the spectrum. It maintains a 4.67 overall rating on switchup.org, and a 4.38 overall rating on coursereport.com. Of the 16 reviews on CourseReport, most have praised the breadth and depth of the instruction, as well as the efficacy of the teaching staff. One Junior Web Developer remarked, “My experience taking this bootcamp was amazing. The staff and instructors are great! It's very challenging, but definitely worth it.” Another reviewer, verified via GitHub, offered this regarding his outcomes, “I doubled my income after this bootcamp and I was already paid decently well as a Software Tester.” The reviewer goes on to say that thanks to his participation in the bootcamps, he was able to secure a position as a software engineer with the United States government.

When it comes to downsides most reviews cited the professional development aspect of the training as lacking. The reviewers noted that the guest lectures and mock interviews encroached on applicable training time. According to one reviewer who took the Full Stack Web Development course, “The course is very intense, as it should be, and there is a lot of material to cover in 10 weeks. However, the time taken for passive lectures could have been greatly reduced by simply organizing each lecture.” The critic goes on to say, “the instructors could have used a "flipped classroom" approach, where students watch online lectures (e.g. from Lynda) at home, and nearly all of the class time is used for active, skill-based exercises.” The remaining few critiques were that the program did not do enough to teach its students how to freelance in the tech world after graduation.
