Case Western Reserve University Boot Camps: Find Top Courses & Training Locations

Case Western Reserve University is the result of the 1967 merger of the Case Institute of Technology (originally the Case School of Applied Science) and Western Reserve University (originally Western Reserve College.). The former was founded in 1880, while the latter dates back as far as 1826. Sharing some of their facilities and faculty in Cleveland, Ohio, the two schools coexisted and cooperated for many years before their formal federation. (An example of this collaboration was the 1887 Michelson-Morley Experiment, a key stepping stone to the discovery of Special Relativity.) In its 2021 ranking of universities and colleges, U.S. News and World Report placed Case Western Reserve as tied for number 42. Since July 1, 2021, the University’s president has been Eric W, Kaler.

The Case Western Reserve University Bootcamps are conducted in collaboration with Trilogy Education Services. A self-styled “workforce accelerator,” Trilogy is devoted to educating working adults and preparing them for new careers in coding, data science, and other tech-related fields.

School Locations

Western Reserve University was originally located in Hudson, Ohio, 30 miles southeast of Cleveland. It moved to Cleveland, which had emerged as the major metropolitan center of Northern Ohio in 1882, where the Case School of Applied Science was already established

The University is now located five miles east of downtown Cleveland, in an area known as University Circle that includes several other important Cleveland institutions, including the Cleveland Clinic, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra.

Case Western Reserve University teaches three bootcamps: coding, data science, and cybersecurity. What Classes Are Available?

Case Western Reserve University’s bootcamps are 24-week classes that are taught part-time, two weeknights a week plus Saturdays during the daytime. They can thus be coordinated with most people’s work schedules.

The coding bootcamp begins at the beginning, by teaching students how to master terminal commands. The first phase of the curriculum includes instruction in CSS, HTML, and JavaScript so that students can create personal web pages from scratch. jQuery and API consumption are covered as well. That concludes the 24-week syllabus, but there is an option to continue with classes in such useful topics as C#, Python, and Amazon Web Services servers.

The data science curriculum begins with a crash course in Microsoft Excel, going into some of the most sophisticated uses of what Microsoft itself considers its best product. From there, the class shifts to teaching how to use Python for data science, Python being one of the most fundamental programming languages in use today. Also covered are essential Python libraries (that is, repositories of set code) such as NumPy, Pandas, and Matpiotlib, as well as such tools as Beautiful Soup for data scraping. From that, the curriculum proceeds to working with databases and querying them with SQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB. The next unit takes on the question of data visualization and how to make your findings intelligible to non-data scientists. That means working with the likes of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, before proceeding onto advanced topics including Tableau, Hadoop, and an introduction to machine learning. The class culminates in a group data visualization project that cements the lessons of the preceding 23 weeks while showing students how to work in groups, as they probably will when they proceed into the job market.

The cybersecurity bootcamp takes a multidisciplinary approach to attaining proficiency in IT, networking, and information security. The class starts by teaching students the fundamentals of the CIA triad (confidentiality, integrity, availability), the tried and trusted model for the development of security policies, along with the concepts of governance, risk (analysis and mitigation), and compliance. That is followed by a look at Linux and Windows systems administration, then at network configuration and security, including encryption, cryptography, and cloud security. Having assimilated all those fundamentals, the course next moves onto security protocols, both defensive and offensive. Included there are such topics as digital forensics for recovering data, preparing a legal case, and performing penetration testing using Metasploit. The course concludes with a test preparation module that gets students ready for the CEH and Security+ certification exams, along with a final group project that serves as a capstone to the entire 24-week process.

Class Formats

Bootcamp classes at Case Western Reserve University are all taught live online, meaning that the teacher is virtual while you learn in the comfort and convenience of your own space. Although the instructor is not in the room with you, since the courses are live, you can still ask questions in real-time.

All class materials are included in the price of tuition and are available online. There is no need to acquire additional books or workbooks.

Admissions Process

The only prerequisites for the bootcamps are being 18 years old and having a high school diploma (or GED), the Case Western Reserve University Bootcamps. The application process begins with a call to the admissions office and an initial interview. Prospective students are then required to take a critical thinking and problem-solving assessment. Those who complete the interview and assessment successfully are admitted into the program. The goal of the process is to ensure that students are sufficiently committed to and capable of completing the program.

Pricing & Payment Options

Tuition for each of the three Case Western Reserve University bootcamps is $11,995. Payment plans are available for those who qualify.

Case Western Reserve alumni receive a $500 scholarship for any bootcamp they choose to attend.

Career Support Services

Included in the tuition are extensive career support services to help graduates find jobs after they have completed the program. Among the services provided are resume support, soft skills training, interview coaching, social media (e.g. LinkedIn) support as well as portfolio reviews to make sure that students are putting their best feet forward when they enter the job market.

Alumni Outcomes

Neither Case Western Reserve University nor Trilogy Education publishes statistics such as completion rate, job placement rates, or graduates’ salaries. According to the bootcamps’ blog, however, “a[n Indeed] survey of 1,000 HR managers and technical recruiters at U.S. companies found that the majority of employers ‘think bootcamp graduates are just as prepared and likely to be high performers as candidates with computer science degrees.’ The same survey also found that 80 percent of these hiring professionals have offered jobs to boot camp students within their company, and 99.8 percent would do it again.”

Coding specialists in Cleveland make an average annual salary of approximately $46,000, while recently reported salaries for coding managers are in the $70,000 range. In the data science field, data analysts take home around $63,000 annually, while data scientists make close to $90,000. As for cybersecurity consultants, they make approximately $80,000 per year, while salaries for directors of information security can reach about $140,000 annually.

What Do Students Say?

Student response to the program is largely positive. One student review, published on coursereport.com stated: “It’s a great program with great staff that wants to help you and see you succeed. If you decide to enter this program I recommend looking into HTML, CSS, and JavaScript ahead of class. They cover the topics well but knowing some of the stuff beforehand will definitely give you a leg up.” Another student commented: “I was truly amazed about the amount of learning that I was able to achieve during the six months of the course. I was also very impressed by the quality of the follow-up from the support team.”

Response to the teachers was generally positive as well, with one review stating: “The Instructors and TAs were knowledgeable and helpful. They offered plenty of encouragement and understood how difficult the camp is. The pace is extremely fast and the material is challenging but they give you the room to grow and develop if you put in the work.” Another reviewer, however, writing on switchup.org, took a different tack: “The instructor was unwelcoming to questions or explanations. Instead, he spoke in jargon, went off on tangents, and only provide[d] cheerleading type support”

Students were fairly unanimous stating that the bootcamp moves quickly and requires a lot of work outside of the classroom sessions: “I WOULD NOT recommend this class to someone who is working full-time and has other commitments. If you are working full-time expect to stay up late nights and work long hours to complete projects and assignments…I would recommend this class to anyone interested that would be able to spend AT LEAST 25 hours a week working on class material. This class should be considered a part-time to full-time gig”
