It was probably quite a few as websites have replaced libraries, newspapers, physical stores, in-person meetups, and much of how we used to find out information or buy the products we need. Every website and web application you’ve ever opened, scrolled through, posted on, or purchased something from had to be designed by someone. A web designer is a person who designs the websites and web applications that you use every day on the internet.

Web design is the craft of combining visual design, user experience, and coding to create websites. A web designer can specialize in one of these areas more specifically. Still, some familiarity with all three skills is necessary for someone who wants to become a professional web designer. And, the earlier you start training in these skills, the easier it will be to figure out which part of the design you’d like to focus on.

A web designer creates both the appearance of the website and its content. Web designers choose the colors, fonts, photos, and layout that make up the user interface (UI). A web designer will use creativity and design-thinking skills to give the website an appealing visual appearance. A website can function perfectly, but people won’t want to use it if it doesn't look great. Web designers also use Sketch and Adobe Photoshop software tools to create website layouts, images, and animations. Web designers will need additional training in using these design software applications.

A professional web designer should be familiar with coding for the web, even if they choose to focus professionally on the design side. This is because a web designer needs a solid technical understanding of what a website can do when building it or making it look good. If you want to be a professional web designer, you’ll need to study coding. But don’t let that intimidate you. Training in coding websites is probably less challenging than you might think.

The three primary coding languages used in web design are HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. HTML (which stands for Hypertext Markup Language). Coders use HTML to “markup” content for use on the site: for example, this paragraph is marked as a paragraph in HTML. You can also use HTML to tag images, links, and headings. Think of HTML as the site's structure: like the concrete foundation and walls that make up the structure of a house.

But, a house needs more than a foundation and walls if someone is going to live in it. It also needs beds, couches, wallpaper, and decorations on the wall. A website is just the same: how a website looks is just as important as how it works. This is where CSS (which stands for Cascading Style Sheets) comes in. Web designers use CSS to “style” or decorate the site. It can be used for establishing font types and sizes, colors, columns, and adjusting the site’s dimensions for tablets or mobile devices. Think of HTML as the architect who designs the house and CSS as the interior designer who chooses the furniture, art, and light fixtures.

The third essential coding language for web designers is JavaScript which lets web designers add interactivity to the site. For example, if you see a popup asking you to subscribe to an email list, that happens because of JavaScript. Other features that can be added to a website using JavaScript include passwords and password creation, interactive games, submission forms, and animations.

Why High Schoolers Should Learn Web Design

Because our lives happen on the internet now, web design is a solid career choice both now and in the future. High school students who train in web design have potential careers not just in web design but potentially in coding and other design fields as well.

Web design is also a flexible career path. You may choose to work for a company on their website. You may choose to work for a web design firm. You may choose to work for yourself as a freelancer for clients or a consultant. If you’re planning on going to college, training in web design could become a lucrative source of part-time income. At a minimum, you’ll be able to create a web presence for yourself– a necessity in the 21st-century workplace.

The average salary for web designers is $52,000 a year. Designers average $68,000 a year. If you choose to pursue digital design, you could make an average of $94,000 a year.
